There are plenty of professional players in Vegas or at least people who try to do it for a living.  The majority of people on this site are the ones who want to be that guy.

   I make a bet to pay the rent , do you go to work drunk? The only thing between me and the dinner line at Saint Vincents is keeping my bankroll alive. I'm not saying this from a pure sports betting perspective.  I'm saying this from a gambling and partying perspective.  I don't get drunk and bet rampant on sports b/c that's not fun.  I get crazy in Vegas because it's fun.

turned $20 into $4500 in 4 days playing poker. the start of my gambling career!

down to $5 in chips in a poker tournament and still won! it was a free-roll... so over 1500 seated.

lost 4k college football and nfl. won a $40 buy in tournament in poker that paid 4k for 1st place the following week.

never give up when you lose or you stay a loser. but dont bet more than you can chew or youll lose your opportunity to take advantage of your wins! not bets!

Wow.  You added so much to the discussion with your sage wisdom.  Thank you for your well thought out input.  Now, put your head back down and follow the sheep in front of you...don't consider that ideas that you didn't incubate might have value and are worth discussing.  Instead, use the tried and tested high level debate tactic of calling the other person stupid.  Kudos to you sir.

What was it about my post that invoked any reference to serving humanity???  It was about having fun.  I was figuring out how to maximize my fun.

You cant be that dumb can you??  Since you lack common sense I will try to help.  They have these things called "BANKS".  They even pay you to let them hold on to your money.  Or they also have these things called "SAFES" in your hotel room.  Free of Charge!!!  But instead you wanna throw $100 bucks because you lack self discipline or are a drunk.  Yeah man your brilliant. Kudos whatever the darn that is.

poker is harder than sports betting. cards fall as they may with no handicap. i understand the ball bounces the way it does in sports betting, but at least i have the refs to keep the game within...

You can't seem to grasp the concept that this is specifically for people that lack self control.  I'm sorry that you can't quite wrap your head around the fact that these people exist.  What good does a safe do if they lack self control...they can just go get it...right??? 

I'm not sure why you can't comprehend this but I've run out of ways to explain it....

Had my first Vegas experience this past summer. I had just graduated from college and a good friend of mine was getting married so me, the best man, decided I'd throw him his bachelor party in Vegas. Two birds one stone, best of both worlds. I take about 1000 (little did I know) thinking I'll only gamble 300 and party/spend/eat with the other 700 for the four night stay. Won about 150 first night playing 21 and roulette, so I'm feeling confident.  We went out and partied, spent the 150 so was back to my original 1000. Wake up early 2nd morning to gamble. Registered for a 110 poker tournament and decided I'll play craps while I wait for it to start. End up losing 150 in 20-30 minutes.  Go play poker tourney get 7th place, 5 get paid. Big stack ships in blinds with j9 vs my ak, he hits straight with my king. Head to sports book throw 170 to win 100 on Rangers, after 2 innings they were down like by 8 runs. At that point I'm livid. I furiously head to the roulette table and start betting by the hundreds on black/red, throwing in little 10 dollar bets on my favorite number, 3. By the time I know it I'm down to my last 100 for the ENTIRE trip! At this point I realize the only way I'm gonna make my money back is by betting on numbers so I put 20 each on 2 numbers, 20 and 3. 2 spins, nothing. Last 20 dollars! Kiss the 2 ten dollar chips and put them on 3. At this point my mind is running crazy thinking of the people I'm gonna have to call to wire me money while also mad at myself for letting this happen on my friends bachelor party. I look at the wheel, and the 3 hits!!! I couldn't believe it, I felt like I was in a movie. The dealer hands me the 700, I tip him ten and immediately cash out! Didn't gamble for the rest of the trip, although I really wanted to. Bachelor party was crazy fun. Girls up there are amazing. Definitely going back this summer, with more funds of course.

Morals of the story: 1. Never take 1000 dollars or less to Vegas.
     2. The longer you stay, the more the house wins.

How is it fun to bet both sides for a gauranteed loss?  There is no action because there is no risk/reward.  Strange that you want go to Vegas to gamble without any chance of winning.  At least the punters try.  You have no heart

Uhhhhhh...Uhhhhhh.....huh???  You might should read the explanation of why we are betting on both sides.  Fun wasn't a factor. 

As for heart - it's a calculated loss to protect the bigger picture.  It's like hiking the ball out of the end zone and taking the safety in order to get the ball back down the field with very little time on the clock to protect the win.  The win is the end game.  I don't consider strategic play to be heartless...just smart.

You are right, I took your quote out of context.  However your reasoning is flawed.  If you lose your first 1k, you will borrow from friends, take a marker, go to Moneytree, or whatever because you have no self control.  Ultimately, you just lose equity or worse by tying  money up in a sure loss.

You are correct when you say that there are other options.  I think that you just have to put yourself in the best possible position and hope you don't go down the marker or borrow route.  I tell my friends ahead of time, don't lend me money and I've never taken out a marker  (Maybe that's my personal line I wouldn't cross).  I also only bring an Amex with basically no cash advance on my trips. 

The cash on hand is just so easy of a temptation - "I'll just get back to even and then stop!"  I'm trying to remove the easy path but there are still others (more difficult) that you could traverse.  Again, I have earmarked this money to spend, I just want to make it last though the trip.

I am going from a foggy memory (about 10 years ago) on this one. But I had a college football parlay and the last game was Oklahoma State -12. The game went to OT and all of the people who bet the other side were inline at the Imperial Palace waiting for the game to end so they could cash.
OK State got the ball first in OT and scored a TD. Big garbage I thought. They will win and not cover. Doesn't do me any good. I can't remember who OK State was playing but on their first play in OT the QB was intercepted. I thought game over. Nope. The DB started running the ball back and the ref followed him down the sidelines. He scored and it counted. OK won by 13 and covered the -12 spread in OT.

The look on all of those guys faces in line waiting to cash was great. I had to wait for the Sports book supervisor to explain to them that they had to get out of line because they lost. Ha, every time I get screwed on a bet I remember that one because it was the last game on a 6 team parlay.

The reason people are calling your "genius" idea "stupid" is twofold:
1. Lots of folks on Covers are lifers. They think about sports betting/gambling a lot. That means research and careful, sober planning. They don't go out, get loaded, and then make bets - they make their bets, win, and THEN go out and get loaded. Your strategy is only needed if you can't control yourself, and the audience you are talking to, for the most part, can TOTALLY control themselves. It's the wrong audience. It's like professing the genius of Daft Punk to my grandpa - he really won't agree.

2. When you come into a forum of pros and semi-pros and say "hey guys I'M A GENIUS" - that carries a lot of weight and you better deliver. The subcontext of "since I drink myself silly and can't control my betting, this is how I lock down my cash - and it only costs 5% interest per day!" really isn't confidence inspiring. It's like going into a local working man's bar, ordering a long island ice tea and yelling at all the guys drinking a bud "Look guys, I'm a genius! 4 types of liquor for one price!" If you are a genius, or have a genius idea, it's really up to the rest of the folks to say so. By announcing "genius" it actually sounds like "douchebag".

I have a better idea that is in the same vein as your "genius" idea - aka lock down the cash. It only costs about $3. Go to the drug store and buy 1 condom and 1 pair of latex gloves. When you get to Vegas and check in your room, put your $2000 rolled up in the condom, tie it off, and swallow it. Our Colombian friends have taught us that condoms don't get digested. Go out the first night and get good and ripped - rage, freak, twerk, whatever. The next afternoon when you wake up your stomach will be "all tore up" from the party. This is where the gloves come in. After you do your business, on go the gloves, retrieve the condom, and voila! your cash is in your hands, safe and ready to be spent.
Celebrate saving $97 with a $1.99 shrimp cocktail and a $95 lap dance from "Raspberry".

Whether my idea is "genius" or not is up to the readers...

Let you in on a little secret, Vegas didn't grow this quick due to pros. We have world class resorts due to the common man coming out here to have fun and let loose, in which I'm sure many of them don't go to work drunk. Not saying there is anything wrong with your mind set and wish you the best and hopefully you don't get stuck at St. Vincent's unless you're volunteering of course.
