I lived in Vegas for a number of years and made my living at the book.Even though I saw people that were in the same situation as I was I can honestly say I never saw some one I knew was betting the rent trying to do it drunk.Logically I never got drunk and tried to do the night-before number crunch. I never did anything that would affect my bankroll while drunk and that was the only way I could relate to shirldog was bets=bankroll=salary=job so if he was intent to burn the bankroll why not take the action that produced the greatest good for the greatest number and forego the hop bets and just toss the money to the winds. St Vincents is the gambler's boogy-man and what I imagine hell to be.

Ya...we're fundamentally very different people.  I can't imagine needing something that I can't control (sporting event) determine if I can make my rent.  That is so foreign to me that I can't fathom it.

I go to work everyday and do well at my job so that I can come to Vegas and get wild.  Maybe that idea is foreign to you.

That being said - You said I should just throw my money in the air by St Vincents...why?  I use the money I make to have fun.  Why is my entertainment not important?  It is clearly important to me.  So important that I want to devise ways to extend it.

Good luck with the gambling man.  That has to be a rough life.

A bet is important and the way you described your betting made it sound unimportant to you and so if you will I made the assumption the money was unimportant and in another sense "dead" money, not IF you lose it but WHEN. There was a famous philospher Mann who advocated that the correct action to take in any setting was that which produced the greatest good for the greatest number,so I followed that your bankroll might serve a wider and more deserving number blowing around the parking lot then simply being plunged into the dropbox at the craptable.I weighed the joy of the walking dead downtown vs your fun/entertainment.St Vincents is the place on MainStreet,LasVegas were the homeless go to get an evening meal and they do remind me of Walking Dead and I would be terrorfied that I might be in their ranks if I didn't 'take care" of the bankroll. Of course I don't want to tell anyone how to handle their bankroll but I may have over-reacted to your post.

"And how do you explode your wagers on a $3 table (usually $300 max)? This story and the thread itself getting more and more like fantasy fiction with every new post."

    KeyElement...

The table I was playing on in The Cal Hotel changes from $3 to $5 depending on time of day... I usually call it the $3 table cause it is the only $3 table that I know of anywhere and I always play on it cause it has a 6 shoe deck and can lower my bets to two $5 hands if need be... I was in a reckless mood then being down all my money and was betting pretty big compared to the other players on the table being it was a $3 ($5???) table... Why would I lie about any of this just to impress people I don't even know or make it sound more interesting... LOL... I even told of stories of me taking it up the butt from the casinos... Just trying to share my experiences with others and enjoy hearing/reading others successes/failures in Vegas... LOL

"And how do you explode your wagers on a $3 table (usually $300 max)? This story and the thread itself getting more and more like fantasy fiction with every new post."

    KeyElement...

The table I was playing on in The Cal Hotel changes from $3 to $5 depending on time of day... "Anyone else see how this doesn't add up? Down to last $100, run up to $1000, all in on 2 hands but still pull $500 out of thin air to double down? "

    DJNY...

$100 to $1000 was over a couple of hours on the table... Built the chip stack up slowly... Not impossible at all, even on a $3/$5 table... I had to catch a plane soon so I went all-in $500 playing two hands, in the same deal... First hand was BJ, dealer pays $750 on the spot... My Bankroll is at $1250 and I use that money to double up on the second hand... which won... Bankroll now at $2750... Not lying at all... One of the craziest betting/winning moments Ive had til this day... Then I just kept on winning til I had to leave to catch my flight.... I think this was the trip that really got me hooked to Vegas... Crazy

I don't think I told this one yet...

Was sitting on the $3 table at The Cal... I hear a bunch of people screaming like they hit the lottery... look over to where the noise was coming from and see a bunch of people crowded around the roulette table... A girl had put a stack of like maybe 30+ chips on one number (didn't see which number) and her friend tailed her for like maybe 10+ chips... Their number hit and they got paid out... Then, they left the initial chips and added more... LOL.. Must have had close to 80+ chips on the number and the dealer had to cut the stack in half cause it was too high and looked like it was about to tip over... Guess what.... Number came right back... Not lying... They cashed out and left with a butt load of $100 chips... Crazy

I went to Vegas around 92..just months away from 21..Decided to gamble with 300 bucks as I was just a broke Auburn student.I decided to withdraw my next semester s tuition money..I drop 300 then another around 900 bucks.I wont ever forget I was down to 10 BUCKS left then I let the 10 bucks ride..won then just probably won upper 80% of my hands. My roomate kept saying"wtf did u do losing ur tuition money"the female pittboss told the girls they relieved..took me hours and was hammered..just getting every card u could think..I got even and my buddy is telling me "Lets go!" Swear to GOD..the goodlooking female pitboss was almost slamming the cards down  like"mf,quit u just had a miracle winning your money back..quit friggin now!"so up 40 I didnt make another bet.I was already a biscuit hair from failing out so my uncle was already to jerk me out of Auburn particularly bc he didnt graduate and this incident of losing my tuition would ve broken his blood vessels and he would have cut me off.He actually saw the withdrawal and cut me off for a semester so I had work graveyard shift to finish my last few semesters...down to 10 bucks ..won it back and I probably wouldnt have quit and lost bc I was so hammerd, but her slamming the cards down and caring enough caused me to take my tuition money plus 40 and fly back sidestepping a landmine..on line story..I got 150 in my account and Im tired of betting..it was like 2002..I bet 150 didnt watchthe Thurs night game..wake up there is around 300 in my acct..bet a fri basket for remaining 300 =AROUND 600..had an if win b4  early Nba game to let it all ride on late Lakers game..so now Im feeling good with about 1100 in acct..hit a 2game parlay for 1000 that paid 2600 that Saturday took Sunday off then decided to let it all ride on Ole Miss vs MIssST..Im losing the game..I want to say Ole Miss is like a 4 pt fav and they are down like 2 have the ball at own 30yl with less than 2min.We couldnt believe MissST THREW THE BALL right in Ole Miss hands. They score a TD..Ole miss covers and Im hammered so my acct is around 7k..I was so drunk and excited I gave my buddy my password and let him bet 3k on Izzo s Mich ST great alaska shoot out game..Couldnt believe it won easily..I withdrew about half  partied like a rockstar..everybody get ur roll on,blow nose 1000<expensive hotels, dropped couple of g s at mall, had Limo all night..then let the other 5k ride on Gators next  Sat vs FSU=lost was inevitable, but to turn 150 to 5000 collect was sweet..and I partied fun for 10 days....

When you say Caliente, Are we talking about near the publo amigo hotel? The Upstairs section in between Senor Frogs and Publo Amigo Hotel?

Starting with how I lost my whole roll within just 4 hours of getting off the plane... 22 years old and only my 2nd time to Vegas... My cousin and I Flew into Vegas for 7 days. As soon as we landed, he jumped on another plane to Cali to meet up with a girl, and then drive down the next day with his brother. So basically I was alone for the night in Vegas. My plan was to play a little craps, get drunk and pass out early to wake up and meet up with my cousins.

My bankroll for the trip was $4000, so I cashed in $1000 at the craps table at Mainstreet. Within 1 hour and about 6 beers deep, I had lost almost all my chips. I ended up cashing in another $1000 thinking I could get it all back... Nope, wrong. Within half an hour, I lost all of my second buy in. Frustrated and wanting to get revenge, I cashed in the rest of my money... $2000. My chips went up and down, up and down. But about an hour and a half later, I lost everything. Ended up going all in on a roller who ends up crapping out after 3 or 4 rolls...

Now drunk off my behind and broke as hell, I called my cousin and told him I lost everything. He actually thought I was BSing and won, but could tell in my voice that I lost. Called my girl back home and told her to wire me the rest of my savings, $5000. Western Union took a huge chunk of my $5000 to do a money transfer. At the end of my trip I ended up winning some back and went home down $3000 for the entire trip.

Lessons learned... Do not chase your losses, instead walk away when the table is COLD... Do not use Western Union if you need money, instead try to get a marker from the casino as long as you know you can pay them back... Drinking and gambling do not mix, especially if you are DRUNK... <<< This one I have a hard time following because the beer just taste so damn good... lol

I got a lot more... What you guys got???

If your advice is to get a marker, you haven't learned any lessons man...

Ref:see gen discussion "how did you start gambling" ..TRAIN69

Back in the sixties I was an broke unemployed college graduate.
One day a couple of friends called me to go to Hollywood Park with them.
I reluctantly agreed since I only had $5 on me. Now keep in mind
gas was $0.25/gal, beer was $1.00 a six-pack etc, in those days,
    a $ bought a lot.
After arriving at the track, paying entrance fee ($1.35) buying lunch
    (beer-$1, hotdog- $.050) had about $2 left. Placed a $2 daily double
bet ....will always remember the names of the horses...Currabee and
    Charlie H.......both won,dd paying $165.
To make along story short, Holly Park had eight races then, and won
7 out 8 that day. Can't remember how much I won that day, but it was
much ..........was not betting $2 after the dd win.
Had to get a job a couple months later when the money ran out.

But from here, it took about 3 seconds. A7-A8 ( for 18 and 19) not too bad but not perfect and then it comes to me at third base. I have a hit hand and I ask him what to do ( I got $25 out there and he has 10k) he says hit it, I do and cannot even remember if I won or lost. Dealer flips his hole card and has 11- the Monkey gives him 21 and she scoops up this guys chips in about 1 second, all gone. Incredible! Guy does not say a sound and walks off into the Vegas night.

The dealer is a little old lady about 65, I would guess. I ask her " you ever see anything like that before?" she just smiles and says- "everyday, everyday"

    Entertaining.

Come on man. They didn't shut down the table for a half hour so this guy could round up some money????

This happened in the late 60's, there wasn't much sports action back then, MNF didn't start until 1970, so basically there were 2 NFL games on Sunday ans 2 college games on Saturday. on TV.  The racetrack was a major part of my gambling action.  I worked as a clerk on Wall St. grossing $110.00 a week.
I called in sick on a Thursday and went to Belmont,  had a good day so I took the bus to the night card at Yonkers Race track.  Won about $400. for the day, more than I ever won before.  Got to keep it going so I call in sick on Friday and off to Belmont another good day won $200, so I'm up $600. for 2 days, another bus trip to Yonkers,  I can't lose.  There is a stakes race with a very heavy favorite from France, I bet $600.00 on the favorite, if it wins it will pay $2.20,   The favorite, my bet, gets nosed at wire, I lose $600.00 almost 6 weeks pay.  THE SAD PART IS IT PAYS $2.20 FOR SECOND THE SAME AMOUNT IT WOULD HAVE PAID IF IT WON.  Wept about that for a week.
