I thought about Are you Experienced? as well... what a revolution in music... to this day, 3rd Stone from the Sun remains as one of my favorite, if not all time favorite melodic progressions... I hear what you are saying about Eruption, and Eddie will live forever as a guitar master, but Jimi's melodic soul is second to none....
I doubt that anyone reading this thread has never heard 3rd Stone, but if you haven't..put it on, close your eyes and just marvel at the genius of Hendrix.... brilliant!

I wish that I could... but I have to say that Nothing's Shocking by Jane's Addiction is one of many released after the aformentioned era that belongs at the top of the list... I'm afraid that there is no easy way to simplify this... great music continues... and that is a good thing... also, what about The Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lipps? Ahhhhh.... the list goes on....
