I just came across the top 500 albums according to Rolling Stone. My choice, Dark Side of the Moon, is #43...are you fucking kidding me? Anyone else think #43 is way off?
On anothe note, #4 on that list is giving Dark Side of the Moon a run for its money lately in my view. Every single song on that album is great.
I agree... when you are talking Dylan, Miles Davis, The Clash and the Beatles etc., I can forgive this list... but putting The Joshua Tree and Thriller above Dark Side of the Moon?!?!?!?!? What... are you FUCKING KIDDING ME!!?!?!?
I just have to rant... I really would like to know who Bono blew to get the acclaim that U2 gets. Are they an interesting band... maybe? But c'mon... musically, they are overproduced and overrated and lyrically, Bono is a slightly above average lyricist at best….
I know that I will get some heat for this as many on WAY into his so called “political consciousness”, but he is WAY too safe to be considered a political pioneer and to be mentioned in the same breath with Jello Biafra, Joe Strummer and Zack de la Rocha. (Or even Pink Floyd for that matter… after all, The Wall, Animals and Dark Side of the Moon all offer more political insight that The Joshua Tree).
But, I digress… we are back to the point that art, in all of its forms, is very subjective…
But I agree… Pink Floyd deserves to be recognized for their innovation, as “neat” as albums like Thriller and The Joshua Tree may have been… put them next to the depth of Dark Side of the Moon and they both look like Sing Along with Elmo!

The bulk of all time greatest albums came from the late 60's to the early 80's. I don't think you'll get any majority to say that anything by Jane's Addiction or the Flaming Lips belongs on an "All Time greatest albums" list. I like some stuff by both but not enough to consider them in a top list. All of our opinions are different. Although our tastes probably overlap more than we know, we'll always differ on who/what we believe to be "The Best".
Well said, I can vote easily 30 albums that I feel are the best albums, from rock to jazz to everything in between. Just better to love the albums you love, and keep playing them for you and those around you as much as possible.

Great post
I like U2 but no way do I consider them one of the greats. Joshua Tree is their best album and I dont think I could listen to that album 5 times in a couple of months without getting annoyed. I could listen to DSOTM 5 times in a day and still want to listen to it again. Some people just fall head over heals for some bands which gives them more credit than they deserve. U2 is a prime example. I think they benefited from the time period and didnt have to compete with the true greats. By the time the mid 80's came bands like Floyd were winding down while U2 was just getting started. If they had to compete with bands like Floyd and Zeppelin in their prime I dont think they get the credit they have received today.

Glad someone said it. I never bought a U2 album/CD after "Under a blood red sky". Oh I like some of their work but I agree they've gotten too much acclaim.
The Rolling Stone list is a joke. "Wish You Were Here" @ # 209? I admit to being biased but that's just a travesty. Also having "Physical Graffiti" @ 70 is a bit of a slap.
