its not that music sucks, its that the industry has sucked the life out of it. everything is so watered down. as soon as one good song comes out, record execs from every company signs x amount of similar bands and churn out the same thing and after a couple months, everyone is so sick of the sound they go to the next thing coming out, what happened to metal where it got soft and glam and watered down happened to grunge in the mid nineties, pop in the late nineties and rap for the last while. Plus with cd sales ruined, to make money, bands have to rely on record contracts to make cash, this results in record execs having so much more control on the direction of the music, they care about making as much money as possible whereas a band would care more about a creative aspect and make original good music. Plus, since music vids came out in the 80s, your look matters as much, if not more, than the music. it ruined metal and has ruined rap. im not a fan of rap and never have been, but hearing run dmc, nwa, dr dre, tupac, big, that stuff is soo much better than 90% of everything coming out now imo. now all you need is one hook, slap the rest of the song, slap together 8 other avevrage at best songs and you got an album. get music videos and thats it. mtv , internet downloading, and big labels have ruined the music industry. Theres still good music, but now you have to dig through mountains of shit that looks, sounds, and smells the same...

I dont know enough about record labels to sufficiently comment on the first half of your post but I am good friends with the editor of a regionally popular music magazine so I'll speak to him about it and then hopefully I can shed some light on the subject.
Re: the rap.
Jay Z is really good at what he does and he's super mainstream.
Kanye is also super mainstream but an acquired taste since he's not that great a rapper but awesome at sampling and producing quality hooks.
It may not be on MTV - probably b/c of subject matter or language - but there is some really good hip hop out there today.
Mos Def (I heard he's nuts now with muslim zealousness but his music is dope)
Jurassic 5 - my favourite hip hop band - I couldnt find it on youtube but do yourself a favour and listen to as much as these guys as possible - especially "Remember his Name"
Common
Talib Kweli - please do yourself another favour and find the remix of this song on limewire or something, it features Kanye, Busta, Mos Def and some other guys Im forgetting

No offense, but this is one part of music I can unequivocally say: blows.
I can appreciate old-school rap and hip hop; stuff like old LL Cool J, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, etc. But this new stuff is absolutely horrendous. All these guys are spoiled shitless and sing about the same bullshit, except in different nauseating ways. They are all cocky as shit, have no perspective on life and make you want to break windows. This and pop country are the two worst things to happen to music.

Rap ... no! You just lost all your credibility!

I would have agreed with you until I was about 15, when I heard this SONG, it changed my life. I dont see how liking mos def, J 5, common or talib makes me loose credibility. These guys are maintaining the genre the old skool build. Their songs tell stories, funny, political, historical, etc. They arent the ones talking about hitting bitches or bling.
check out the videos i posted. if you did, you'd see your characterization of todays hip hop should not cover the entire genre and probably only a select few cookie-cutter mtv made "artists".

ah cmon mugg, there's gotta be something to rap that you're not appreciating. Did you really listen to all the clips I posted? Listen to the lyrics and visualize the story....hopefully you can develop an appreciation for something new.
I mean wasn't elvis' music opposed with similar fervor by an older generation. Maybe the music doesn't speak to you because your not black or poor or whatever. Im not either but I can still appreciate the story and the "beat".
Also, lets get away from calling it rap. The genre is hip hop...I as well as Im sure you do, associate rap with crap like 50 cent, akon, that soulja boy loser etc

Yeah, but most rap is what you hear on the radio: clubbing music done to different shitty beats and that's why it's very easy to stereotype. I would be comfortable saying rap is not music because of what it has become. When you mention the word "rap" to someone they don't think of one or two artists who are recording against the grain and you don't hear about too often. They think of the Ying Yang twins, or TI, or shit like that and this music is garbage.

No Platy, I didn't listen to all the clips..........with all due respect, I've heard some rap, or tunes by a rapper, that weren't all that bad. But that isn't my genre.............I don't care for country either. This is the dichotomy between you & me.........I don't mean to dis your likes........but music means more than a steady beat & rhymes, it means more than bass thumping.
Listen to the entire albums " Supertamp....Even in the quietset moments" & "Pink Floyd: Wish you were here"........& Alice in Chains: Jar of Flies".............there is no comparison to the emotion, lyrics, relevance, & outright musical genius .....to what is out there these days. You may/will disagree & that's fine...........I'm in my 40's.........I'm guessing you're younger. We can disagree...........no sweat.

no worries, Im not taking offense; Im trying to change hearts and minds. and yes I am younger, at least half your age. Im surprised how idealistic I still am, I remember when my friends were the same way, but they are far too cynical now.
My brother is a yr and a half older and utterly convinced that music today sucks. as a result he's closed himself off from new bands and occasionally relies on me to turn him on to new music. Despite his convictions, the other day he asked me who I was playing on my stereo (Blitzen Trapper, "Wild Mountain Nation" and Two Gallants "Nothing to You") and enjoyed the songs but would never "get into them" as he would with the bands of the early-mid 90s bands. The irony of the situation nearly killed me. He liked the music but maintains his convictions that music today sucks.
Back to the idealism - I want to be a politician and my attitude will either be conceived as ridiculous or inspirational, I'll keep you posted.
I'll continue to post excellent examples of good music today regardless of genre in the hopes that I can turn someone on to something new.

I can appreciate it, but I don't know of too many artists (except Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald and stuff).
I've always found that I need music to give me a kick in the pants. Jazz doesn't do that for me, but I'd be open to hear of some suggestions of what's good.

I dont listen to jazz, Amy Winehouse is probably the closest thing to jazz these days. She's super talented, just ignore all the shit in her personal life.
not jazz, but has anyone met Wintersleep?

Not really sure what type of jazz you like, but I started listening to bebop (like Charlie Parker) and cool jazz. My favorite jazz album is probably miles davis-birth of the cool.

Wow, who knew wintersleep would beat out Modest Mouse, Band of Horses, or Neverending white Lights for shout outs.
Its a long shot in this forum but if you're a good looking (without makeup) and smart female university student, chances are you are in to:
The Go! Team
More Go! Team (my fav song by them)
IMO the music videos take away from the song b/c they're so busy, press play, minimize and enjoy FUN music...I love talking music with my female classmates.

Alfie - the life of her younger brother being ruined by weed
LDN - a commentary on social problems in larger cities
Just because it has an upbeat doesnt mean its juvenile. She writes about her personal life, society, and pop culture on top of often cheerful melodies with polka or big band undertones.
I dont listen to it every day, but I think there is a time and place for it. That is, unless you subscribe to the credo that real men only listen to rock.
