Personally Im kinda offended when I hear that 'music today sucks.' There are plenty of extremely talented artists out there, but they may not be in the mainstream yet. For the most part people seem to think that music was only good during a particular period of time. Just like everyone thinks SNL was awesome when they were 14-17 but thinks everything before and after sucks. The reasons ppl think SNL sucked before was that they didnt get the jokes and after because they no longer found that type of humour funny - needed more edgy, biting, sophisticated, whatever. For music, its always been awesome but you probably arent 'in the loop' anymore. You may be listening to your old favs at the expense of looking into new bands.
Check out these guys:
MGMT - if you like radiohead, the cure, david bowie
Modest Mouse - completely original, I cant even begin to compare them to anyone. their newest CD is terrific
Band of Horses - if you like the Arcade Fire
Neverending White Lights - seem to fall into the Arcade Fire liking crowed as well, I heard he's awesome live
Bright Eyes - if you like modern day folk music
Two Gallants - ibid (to repeat from my last thread)
Blitzen Trapper - ibid
I guess thats who Im listening to alot of these days, I'll post more but none of those songs is more than 2 yrs old. Ill post more when I have time.

I think when people say things like "Music sucks today" they are referring to mainstream pop culture.
Just think of the transition we have undergone in this department. Just a few years ago and in the late 90s you had bands like: Third Eye Blind, Eve 6, Everclear, Offspring, Hoobastank, Jet, Oasis and others being played on mainstream radio. Now, it's all the same decrepit, threadbare, nauseating club rap that rattles my brain like a chandelier in an earthquake. All the same lame beats with the same message, "I want to straddle your ass, apple bottoms, I wanna ride on my 24's and get high." Figure out the least creative ways to bring this message across in a song and someone will hand you a record deal.
Of course, music is a somewhat touchy area as we all have our peculiarities, but I hope we can all agree that the 90s and even the 80s were better (as far as mainstream goes) with bands like The Cure, Blondie, U2, The Police, etc. being played on the radio. I can even appreciate old-school hip-hop but sorry Nas, it is dead.
Most of the best music these days is not totally underground but never makes it to the very top either. I don't think people can appreciate good music anymore. Personally for me, this is alternative and indie rock.

Ditto everything you said. Alternative rock of the 90's was excellent. Very underrated at that time. There's always some good underground stuff but the new stuff that has makes it now just blows.

Blitzen Trapper and Beirut are the only "underground" bands I listed.
Two Gallants are still regionally popular (California) but their performance on Jimmy Kimmel should make them more popular nationally. Bright Eyes has a dedicated following but their unique folk-blues style prevents them from getting any bigger than they are.
I cant turn on the mainstream rock station here in Toronto without guaranteeing that I'll here Neverending White Lights, Band of Horses, or Modest Mouse. MGMT will be there shortly, and I heard their song time to pretend, playing in the background of the trailer for the new gambling related movie "21".

There's a serious drought for rock. For a while it seemed good bands were coming out of the woodwork.
Where's some good Stone Temple Pilots-type bands right now? I listened to all the clips you posted & none of them really stands out.
Hard rock isn't my favourite genre, even though Smashing Pumpkins are my favourite band (their newest CD is ok but Gish, Siamese Dreams and Mellon Cholie and the infinite Sadness remain the 3 greatest rock albums ever IMO)
That said these guys got me through some tough uphill cycling and I love listening to these guys before a hockey game. If you havent already met them, meet Chevelle (new and mainstream):
"Well Enough Alone"

Our tastes are just different. Here's a title cut from a relatively obscure band from the late 70's-early 80's. There just isn't a lot of rock out there like this anymore. Shooting Star

Maybe if record companies and radio stations actually kept the focus on developing a long term thing with artists instead of one hit quick buck wonders, you'd probably find there are actually great artists today as well. It's not like people can't write great music all of a sudden since that's been going on forever. If the industry was like it is nowadays back in the 60s, 70s and 80s, I seriously wonder how many of those bands would have become the legends they are today.
THEMUGG, Shooting Star did Last Chance right? That song rocks, but in my opinion Shooting Star sounded similar to a lot of the late 70s/early 80s stuff like Foreigner and Hagar as far as the music/guitar riff part of it.

I don't know if anyone will appreciate this kind of stuff, but I am into turntablist stuff and like how these guys have turned turntablism into more of a musical thing than just scratching, hip-hop and battles. They have a new album coming out soon I believe.

Im lukewarm on the shins but Im all in on the silversun pickups. I think they're the second coming of the Smashing Pumpkins. If they get more melodic and listener friendly, I see no reason why they cant be the biggest thing to hit rock since Fender. thanks for mentioning them. Keep the good new music coming...

They give me a better vibe than the Pumpkins. Everytime I listen to them I feel like I am in a dark room listening to gritty music. Don't ask me to explain, it's weird.
I feel like the Pickups have a more creative sound. The bridge to Lazy Eye is one of the most mind-blowing things you will ever hear.

the point of this thread was to show not only that there's really good music out there but that the majority of people stop looking for it later in life. Im going on the assumption that ppl that say "music today sucks" are listening to the same bands they were into when they were a teenager. I'd be interested in a sociological explanation as to why this seems to be so, but I assume its has something to do with good memories of easier/care free times.
Enjoy:

And I couldn't find a studio version on youtube but here's a live version of Architecture in Helsinki. Wikipedia "Twee" and you'll learn about this newer genre of music and maybe you'll impress a friend or something.

Many of the bands/musicians I've listened to in the last 20-30 years ago are still active...........& a lot of their work is still on the top 100 album charts. There's a reason for that. I'd wager that 95% of what's out today won't be around in even 5 years.
