NBA is by far my easiest money...I don't know what it is. Now I have been doing this for 12 yrs, but I find it rather easy. You figure there's 82 games, and I would say 80% of the players in the league dont give full effort all the time. Let alone in the 3rd game in 4 nights on a wednesday in Milwaukee.....I thik trends in the nba are easy to spot and follow. I've gone on a 19-4 run in a 3 day span this yr and tonight alone I went 7-2. Now I usually give it all back in football but have a nice 4 yr run in both sports going. Definatly a marathon and I'm glad I stuck to it, as the early yrs were tough.
GL to all this weekend

But from my experience the most important thing that really matters in trying to make money in sports betting is money management. Greed disrupts pure thinking and original action. You must put yourself in the proper mindset to think as purely and in the most correct way possible. The amount that you bet whether that is $5 or $50K will mean the same as you have to be able to accept that loss because at the end it is gambling. Understand the cycles of the NBA too especially teams are on different cycles.
Sports Betting incorporates it talent/personnel and match up which is basic. The true handicapper must be able to identify the psychological advantages/disadvantages in different situation, the emotional aspect of each team or game, the mental aspect which tests the mindset of all teams/players/ and coaches.
The coaches mindset is very important in my opinion. Take a look at Avery Johnson for New Jersey Nets. Just taking a look athis style of managing and motivating his players make New Jersey still cover even if they are losing the game SU.
So the nets covers their spreads because of the coach's mindset?

Aithen888 "So the nets covers their spreads because of the coach's mindset?"
Sorry for the wrong use of words.
What I meant was the Head Coach of the NBA teams definitely have an influence on how hard a team plays night in and night out. Avery Johnson is for sure one of the reasons that Nets will never tank a game just because they are out on paper.
Nets are 6-14 but 11-9 ATS.

I only bet NBA unders ... presently ( season to date 12/3) ... 125 games have gone over the total and 159 have stayed under the total ( 56% ) . These are non-overtime games. Players tend to bet the over and I tend to look for good value unders. Year after year the unders have a distinct advantage vs. the overs. There is one play this evening that shows good value -- I played Philly/Charlotte under 188. I find 3 maybe 4 good value plays each week and that's all I wager on. Categorically this has been a winning strategy for me ... GOOD LUCK

I would only advise betting in the NBA if you have a basketball background and really understand the game and match ups, along with trends, and know how certain teams play against each other.
Exactly. good point. If you understand the ins and out of the game youll be ok. I bet NBA games only once in a while when i see a situation unfold that i like alot and believe it or not i hit 3/4 on average so i can say i do pretty well.

Great thread MIKADO---------I especially enjoyed KAPONO and VIP'S posts. If I may,I'd like to add my two cents.
Do most people that bet on the NBA make money ?? NO !! The reason why most sports gamblers aren't successful is !!
1. DISCIPLINE / MONEY MANAGEMENT-------Betting with money you don't have. Betting too many games. Chasing. Parlays. teasers etc. etc. etc.
2. POINT SPREAD AWARENESS----------The biggest wagering Myth !!! The bookies are setting us up !! A point spread is intending to create action on both sides. Time and time again i hear that Vegas controls the outcome of games. YEAH OK !!! That's the ignorance of a novice sports bettor.
IF YOUR A RECREATIONAL SPORTS BETTOR. I'D SAY IT'S ALL GOOD. WHO AM I TOO PREACH.
Just by going through some of the threads on day to day basis i can honestly say that there some '''INCREDIBLY SHARP GUYS IN THIS FORUM"" Now that doesn't mean they all make money betting the NBA. You also need a solid money management system. Good handicapping is there for the taking. There's plenty of square money to go around.
For those that want to make the transition into serious sports betting. My advice is that you have to take it very seriously. It's a full time job.
THE CORRECT WAY TO HANDICAP NBA GAMES Situational betting patterns, follow injury reports religiously, how much is home court worth, how teams play rested , how teams play B2B, extended road trips, east coast and west coast swings, guard matchups, interior matchups, look ahead games, you have to identify the coaches that pull out their starters when they have big leads. There is so much more that i can fill this whole page.
THE WRONG WAY TO HANDICAP NBA GAMES """TRENDS""" UGLY,UGLY,UGLY. I call trends a lazy mans cap. Especially trends that date over 2 to 3 years. They have absolutely nothing to do with today's game.
GOOD LUCK AND I WISH EVERYONE MUCH SUCCESS IN THE NBA THIS YEAR

I must say determining home court advantage is really tricky in the NBA as it changes like the seasons. Very situational thing you have to consider as well.
Denver and Utah at home get more points than any other team, and rightfully so. Their arenas have the most distance between all the other cities in the NBA, also in addition you have the higher altitude. Those teams are worth about 5 points to the spread when they play at home during most times of the year, especially during playoffs. Other teams are worth between 3-4 at best most nights.

(just to lighten the mood a little bit) I ask my dog if she likes the OVER or the UNDER in a game, if she runs away, I take the UNDER, if she jumps up at me, I take the OVER. I recommend doing this, but limit yourself to only four plays a day, and please reward your pet when you win.
Good Luck Everyone!

In regards to dealing with stress... I know that you spend a lot more time capping games than most people on here. You spend a ton of time of researching and that can definitely take a toll and burn you out. The best thing to do is CARDIO and I would recommend taking days off once in while. Like completely just avoid Tuesdays or something. There are so many games and opportunities in this sport that its not going to matter if you stop betting for one day a week.
Ive been trying to not look at the day's card until 4-5 PM during the week so I don't think too much about the games. It helps to see how the action/line moves go throughout the day though. Each person's style is different so you have to do what works out best for you, but if you feel burned out TAKE A BREAK.
I run 3 or 4 times a week. I do it for health reasons but it's true it helps with any kind of stress you have and makes you feel good afterwards. The best way to help w/stress is not to watch the games you bet. I don't watch most of the games I bet, you will feel 100% better because of this.
I went on vacation for a week during the baseball season and got dozens of emails asking where I was. I needed a break, MLB grind is like no other, it's ten times worse for the bookies and sportsbooks. 15 games everyday, first five, RL, totals, etc the options never end and they have to keep a strong line out on every single option. We all need to take a break every now and than or you will go crazy.

I used to buy it, but if you have high-speed internet.
There is no use into getting it anymore when you can watch all the games online.
The only benefit of that is DVRing games you won't get a chance to see, but that's a lot of basketball to watch.
Nothing against League Pass, I bought it for many season in a row and this season is the first I didn't. Technology has caught up to where it isn't really necessary. I always hook my laptop to my tv through hdmi and stream games in the four corners clicking the mouse on the corner I want to hear the sound through. This in my opinion has allowed me to do better than flipping channels because I can watch 4 games at once.

try simulating the games with NBA 2k11 yeah the video game
8-0 so far since we started simulating the games / it also has to be hooked up to the playstation network for all the latest player movements/injuries and schedule of games
i'm not saying its 100% accurate but it might be worth to take a look

I believe that to be rich in this world, all you need is to use your brain and intelligence properly. If you can figure out a way on how to win on NBA and earn an income from it, then it may very well be a good source of extra or maybe even a lot of money for you.
A good friend of mine, is a professor at a university here in the Philippines wherein he only makes around 50 grand a month. However, he does live in one of the most fancy villages here in the country (Bel-Air village for Filipinos reading this) and drives a porsche. He teaches part time and uses his NBA knowledge as a means of support in his life. His techniques are very easy and he managed to discover techniques while driving on a normal day.
Some say its luck, I say its a matter of how well you think :)

I have made money in the NBA the past 2 years...the 2 years before that I just about broke even. There are several keys for me, and most people have already hit on them, but of course I will throw in my two cents.
1. LIMIT YOUR PICKS - With all of the quarter plays, halftime plays, full game plays, and totals there is 7 possible plays for every game. Add in the player props and team totals and there can be quite a few numbers that start to look good. If I limit my plays to 2-4 a night, I just about always come out on top. When I start throwing in a lot of quarter plays and props and such I find myself floating around the 50% mark. There is no reason at all why if there is 8 games on the board you should have much more than 4 picks.
2. MONEY MANAGEMENT - Figure out what 1 unit means to you...and freakin stick to it. Only within the past couple weeks have I started playing a few 2 unit plays, and I've even thrown in a few 3 unit plays (very rare). If your "unit" is supposedly $50 and you bet 3 units as a minimum on every bet, then guess what, your unit is $150. Adjust accordingly. No more than 10% of your bankroll should ever be placed on a bet. If you go on a losing streak...once again, adjust accordingly.
3. BECOME A LINESMAKER - This is one that very few people on here do from what I see. IMO it is the best possible thing you can do to accurately bet on the NBA. Before the lines come out, write down all the games on a piece of paper, and if you have at least a minor clue about the game of basketball you should be able to throw out a spread and total reasonably well. This is and has been the number one factor for me in capping the NBA. For instance, today I capped the Celtics/Nets game at the Celtics being 11.5 point favorites. When I saw the line was only 6.5 my first thought was obviously, why? Rondo was out, ok fine...are the Celtics without Rondo better than the Nets? I deducted that even w/o Rondo playing, the Celtics should be double digit favorites. This also plays into Rostos' theory that the games are severely fixed and David Stern plays a part in where the games go over or under etc. My opinion on that is if a 3-pointer by Glen Davis, or a layup at the end of the game decides the total...then you had no business being on that total. The linesmakers knew exactly where that game would finish up. Generally, my plays don't come down to the last couple plays of the game. There are going to be times it's inevitable, but for the most part they are decided before that.
4. VALUE THE OPINIONS OF OTHERS - It doesn't matter how long you have been gambling, how much you have won or lost, how much you bet per game...there are times when you can learn from others. I have many people on here that I make a point to check out their threads and see what their feelings towards a game are. This is obviously made much easier by those that post write-ups with the games, but a simply question of why are you on this clears that up nicely. I have had times where I stayed off a pick because someone had some valid arguments against it...and I have played a pick because someone had valid arguments for it. However, I do not EVER blindly tail someone just because they are on a play. This will ALWAYS lead to bad things and bitter feelings.
5. MATH AND STATISTICS ARE YOUR FRIENDS - This is the biggest factor for me in my 1st quarter/1st half plays. I take the recent games for each team either being @ home or on the road...figure out average points scored, average points allowed, and the differential. Then I go back to #3 and become a linesmaker. Tonight, the Hornets had a poor record in the 1st quarter on the road, while the Spurs had a solid record at home in the 1st quarter. Add to that the fact that the home team had a solid lead to start the game in both their meeting this year, and I had a damn fine play.
Many of you already know that I keep a detailed spreadsheet of the daily trends for certain NBA statistics (O/U, Home Team, Favorites, East @ West, West @ East, Double Digit Favorites, and Home Underdogs). I highlight a daily trend when it hits at 60%...and focus in on that trend. Early Sunday Afternoon UNDERS....Sunday/Monday B2B UNDERS...Fade the Home Team and Favorites...Take Home Underdogs on the weekend...etc.
Great thread so far...and hopefully we can continue to make money in the NBA

I would only advise betting in the NBA if you have a basketball background and really understand the game and match ups, along with trends, and know how certain teams play against each other.
I would have to agree.. I think success depends on you being able to properly assess each team on a nightly basis based off how they are currently playing as well as match-ups and injury, fatigue & moral factors. If you could correctly interpret this information I believe you could accurately predict a winner based off a line on a consistent basis and be right more then you are wrong. I think this is an ability that people have to develop just like any other ability. Lately I am so focused on NBA i don't even know why i try to bet NFL. I just like watching my Jets.. when it comes to handicapping I need something in constant action that I can see every night and not have to wait a week where its like a whole blind spot.
