I haven't been on covers long, but I've been interested in sports recreationally for a long time and seriously just this year. Maybe I'm one of those guys you mentioned in your OP.
# of Bets. I don't see a reason to limit the number of bets you make. If you have the time to research and cap it, take it. +ev is +ev.
Stress Relief. I actually try to avoid watching/following the games live. But stats are mostly what I used to cap and I can use a box score for that (maybe others can't). Do I lose some games because I didn't incorporate matchups, etc? Yes. But if I can hit 56-60% I'm happy.
Bet Size. You shouldn't bet more than 10% of your roll on a game? It's more like 2.5% for me.
Motivation. I honestly don't know what to do to keep me motivated after nights like tonight where I go 4-9 (losing 3 totals by 2 points combined and LAC down by 4 with 30s to go). Maybe a McD's uniform next to the computer - I hear that works.

David Stern should post on Covers how much he's made.
I want to know how much referee's bet on their games... one being Joee Crawford... every game this guy seems to push the total OVER the #... dude must be set financially.. especially when he can make $$ in baseball also when his brother umpires

I've been betting for 5 years now and I guess I'm lucky to really hit it off in my second year. I think I lost a lot during my first year, good thing that the unit i wager is small back then. Anyway here are some tips I could think off that I'm doing and has been working for me in the NBA. I cap nba, soccer, nfl, mlb and boxing.
Never parlay or tease your bets.
Never bet on ML.
Always cap your games first.
Money Management is key.
Never wager with an amount you can't pay (the emotional stress will eat you alive)
Never chase.
Always bet standard amount (however confident you are with one play, there's always something that can f*ck you over. If you normally bet 50 a game don't go over betting 50.)
It is best to focus on one team in the NBA and follow that team. The better grasp you have on one team, the easier it is to make money on them (1Q, 1H, 2H, Full game, Team totals, player props, matchups, trends, etc.)
Always set a target. Start small. (e.i. aim for 1000 usd per week, when you reach 1000 save the 500 or 600 and use the remaining amount to wager the remainder of the week).

Why is it so hard for people to fade themselves...Deep down allot of people bet on teams because its there fav and let there emotion get into capping a game...thats the remedy for loosing....
get a excel sheet together, put some stats together add them up and make that your system...fade it and the result is gonna be way better than the 2 or 3 hrs u spend capping and losing...let go your emotions when gambling....

I made good money in baseball this year but NBA is a tough fucking sport to win at.....my problem is money management i want the big hits and dont think long term....if i had discipline i would be way better off in the long run. It's fucked up i go 8-2 one day and then 2-4 the next....nba is definitely one of the hardest sports to win at imo
I went 0-4 yesterday. If this lac game stays under I'll go 6-0 today.
It's called gambling.

I have been doing 2 & 3 Team Parlays on the ML. I wager $500 to win $800 to $1000. I have hit most of my picks, but lose when I parlay NFL or NCAA. Duke screwed me Saturday & Baltimore last night. I hit NE + MIA + UTAH ML to hit $800 tonight.Tooh NE TT over 24 for $500. IMO, take the Favs ML in good situations & avoid the juice of losing straight up on 1 game. Look at Denver last night 1 pt win. Can't trust the lines, need full blowouts to cover nowadays. 2 Team Parlays ML. Atleast if you lose, it'll be an upset, so what can you do? LAL last week...prime example.

I think this thread turned out to be a very valuable lesson and info to most of us. I agreed taking a break if stressed out. Read it many times before "This is a marathon not a sprint"
There is always time and opportunity to bet but don't neglect your life and enjoy it as your life won't wait for you.
Thanks Mikado for initiating this thread.

Might also be good for some of us to take a break closer towards all-star week from betting the NBA. Many teams and players look forward to this time of year and it is much harder to figure out how motivated a team may be.

I appreciate this thread and it has opened my eyes... I'm more the recreational bettor and the money i lose is not a big deal, not stressing me out as my units are really small... I've been betting for awhile and not really sure if i have profited, that most likely means i haven't but i'd like to learn to be profitable.
before this season, it was really just gut feelings i based my plays on. I only started to try to research the games a little more recently but for the most part (i actually spend a lot of time looking at trends), i seem to emphasize the wrong trends and angles and concentrate on the less important angles or trends which is really frustrating when i lose. i have just started to document wth it is what i'm doing, i already know that i have poor money management, play way too many games, and add late plays whether im up or down (really stupid, can't keep the wins or dig a deeper hole).
money management and and limiting the plays should be the easiest part for me to correct if i am to take it seriously but is there any way anyone can help us losers out with tips on how you cap your games? predict lines, know situational games such as un motivated players or look ahead games etc....
There are a few select here that really know what they are talking about and I always read what they have to say but sometimes i read it too late as i have already posted a play. I don't want to just tail those people, i'd like to get a grasp on what you knowledgeable people know so i can make an educated selection of plays.
I guess i'll learn along the way but a hand wouldn't hurt

As a new person to the sports betting world, I find every piece of knowledge I can find here on covers valuable, especially this thread on the importance of understanding that you need to learn how to walk before you can run.
My goal is to keep my head down, bet a little, and learn a lot.

I'm a 2 y.o bettor but I really started to make money 3 months ago. Since then I've earned 1500$ on NBA and 2500$ on italian soccer, I don't put my pics here cuz I'm not an NBA expert at all, All I do is wait or the right game to bet (exemple: Miami -4,5 yesterday), only betting 2-3 games a week.
4k in a week, holiday booked :D

It's very important to learn from your mistakes in each loss. To be able to understand why you lost will keep you from making the same errors. I know plenty of people that have been betting for 20+ years and still consistently lose because they still haven't learned the game of basketball. It takes a good amount of time and effort, there is no sure system or way to pick games other than using your own experience and intuition.

What happens when you don't have discipline, fellas? You end up like me, getting intoxicated on a Friday night and placing an "all-in" bet in a drunken state... of course, we all know how those end
Gotta wait now to re-build the bankroll... I'm thinking about trying to institute a "no intoxication" rule to my betting. If I'm not clear minded, I don't put a play in... the hard part is actually sticking to that.

Sorry to hear that Kap.
Never drink and gamble, it will cloud your judgement and impair your decision making. Watching the games are drinking goes fine together, but don't mix gambling and drinking.
Why do you think Las Vegas casinos offer free alcohol to its patrons? Exactly.

Hotels aren't standing in the desert because the guys behind them are stupid, that's for sure.
I should have known better. I do know better. But what the hell can I say, I'm a degenerate. Once I can reign supreme over my own internal struggle and can actually be disciplined in doing this, I should be OK. I'm up units on the year after 218 plays, so that has to count for something knowing how hard it is to make money in the NBA for most people, so I know I can do it.
Appreciate the kind words though Mikado.
