Public health experts are sad and shocked at US reaching 200,000 covid deaths milestone. Staggering loss of life could have been prevented if pandemic response hasn't been worser than in past governments. US started off on the wrong foot and struggled to catch up to other countries. There has been no coordinated federal response as required in Obama pandemic playbook. Many of the pandemic preparations made in previous 2 decades have been cancelled, making it harder for other levels of government to step in and fill the leadership void. Despite failure in national leadership, local and state governments have done the best they could.
There are many problems such as lack of universal healthcare and confusing messages that lead people to not take coronavirus seriously. Experts are surprised that basic safety such as mask wearing has been politicized. Dysfunctional for Trump administration to undermine science and top public health organizations such as US center for disease control, National institute of health and Food drug administration. More could be done to keep people safe. Testing, contact tracing, ventilation and greater actions by government.
