Hours before the Maine mass shooting, the Senate approved an amendment that would scale back background check requirements for some veterans and service members with mental health issues. The amendment was authored by Republicans John Kennedy and Jerry Moran. What could possibly go wrong?

Just another mass failures with many agencies to blame. However the weapons of war should be permanently ban! Michael Johnson’s place is in a church where his heart belongs and not in Washington where fairy’s with lead use off a cliff!

A 22-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged with second degree murder in a shooting on a crowded street in Tampa, Florida, early Sunday morning, leaving two people dead and 16 others injured, authorities said.

You have the freedom to believe what you choose and still remain wrong on the issue and indeed you are wrong.
Ignorance is what you are comfortable with. Carry on.

Isn't it strange how mental illness hardly massacres anyone in Canada, Australia & the UK. Or Japan, South Korea, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. . . .
Piggy backing off these countries, would you also like to post the punishments for illegal possession of guns in these countries? The compare to the punishments in the US. Is there a big difference?

Punishment for illegal gun possession varies widely ranging from fines to death penalty with prison being the most common punishment. US has the highest incarceration rate in the world. So US isn't soft on crime. Big differences are that other countries have lower rates of gun ownership among population and stronger gun controls.

I realize that Wikipedia doesn't meet the gold standard for data but the link here is comprehensive.
My stance is if you use a gun in the commitment of a crime, you must do time with no pleas available. Bring back mental hospitals/institutions . We have sick fucks walking the streets like timebombs.

KCB has posted an absolutely true statement which is the kind of fxcking bullshxt that right-wing gun-loving chowderheads post to oppose almost all responsible gun laws (I certainly would oppose a law that would ban all guns).
"Approximately 5%of mass shootings are related to severe mental illness."
I wish Covers would provide members the ability to block other members that they strongly dislike. Thank goodness Disqus does.

The U.S. ""is"" soft on crime when you compare incarceration rates today from just a short 5 years ago.
Murder rates in the inner-cities, smash & grab, petty theft, etc. has all skyrocket since then.
Do you see any correlation THIRDPERSON ?

Contrary to common misconception, US crime rates have generally trended downward since 1992. Except for increase in property crime in 2001 and increases in violent crime in 2005-6, 2014-16 and 2020-21.

If you're going to poke fun at someone, why not cite they're entire quote? It's beneath you.
Nothing he said is untrue. It doesn't mean I agree with his overall premise. Crime is trending in the wrong direction and while democratic policies are completely to blame, they definitely aren't helping things. If you look into the numbers though, and we know that you are a numbers guy, you will see that his point is factual.

As far as the numbers part he is basically right because depending on your time frame nearly all crime is down; but he is incorrect on the trend for the two he mentions. If you pick the right time frame even violent crime and property crimes are down.
Certainly you have spikes but there is a solid downtrend since the early '90s in pretty much all crimes.
I was not clear the way I worded it.
When you frame your point by saying even though two of the major crimes are up that crime is down that does not make your point very well.
He should just have said crime is down even though people hear about it more because of the 24-hour news cycle, etc.
The other issue is this is a classic sidestep the Left will use. This is implying that crime rate and 'being soft' on crime are the same issue; they are not.
Address the recidivism rate and the rehabilitation rates to make your point. Do not simply say crime is down because it is still a major concern for folks and there is plenty of room for improvement still.
Just because folks are in jail does not mean crime is down and that you are 'hard on crime'. That is not the way the logic works. The three things can be entirely separate issues.
Maybe that clears it up some.

I'd be interested to see the parameters on this 5%....as in, what constitutes a mass shooter to qualify as "severe mental illness". Were they diagnosed? When, post or pre shooting ? Were they on SSRIs ? I'm guessing a number much higher than 5% of them never even had this addressed in their lives, essentially going "unchecked" growing up through the system. Only just recently did society even start to consider mental health an issue worth talking about.
Thank you America
