Covid-19 cases will threaten critical infrastructure, scientist says
Osterholm predicts that with the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, there may not be enough people who are well enough to keep hospitals, grocery stores and gas stations working. The change in CDC guidelines is not just about helping the economy, he said: “It was to play to the very safety of our everyday lives.”

April Fools Day 2020;
"I've been trying real hard to keep this thread non political & think I've done an OK job. But I just came across this data. The following states have not implemented a "stay at home" order as of yet: Nevada, North & South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and Arkansas.
The following have a "partial" stay at home order in place: Utah, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Mississippi, Alabama. Georgia, South Carolina and Wyoming. In Wyoming the Head of the Medical Society asked the Governor to take action but he declined."
They have something else in common. All but Nevada have Republican Governors.
WTF?"
April 16th
"South Dakota is currently experiencing one of the highest rates of new COVID-19 cases in the US. From Monday 4/6 to Sunday 4/12, the state saw a 154% increase over the week.
Hey Governor...ya think it's time to implement "stay at home" yet? "
OK, I WILL FIX IT;
TRYING HARD NOT TO BE POLITICAL BUT I CAME ACROSS THIS DATA;
Today it's now 465,670 cases in the U.S.
New York has broken California's single day case record of 61,969 set back on December 16th, 2020.
New York reports 67,226!!!!!!!
------------those criticisms of republican states not implementing stay at home orders in your 2020 posts were when 30,000 cases a day recorded, how about now??

I will agree the blue vs red state is silly crap. My last sentence in my original post should be in a different thread.
What I will point out is all the criticism in the beginnings of this thread directed at Governors who resisted lockdowns and stay at home orders when the US had 30,000 a day case rate. Now we're at 465,000+. Are you now upset there are no lockdowns today or were those Governors right all along?
Let's all pray and hope the next wave is mild.

Skip indoor New Year's Eve parties to avoid Covid-19, doctor says
People should skip big indoor New Year’s Eve parties this year, said Dr. Jonathan Reiner, professor of medicine and surgery at George Washington University.
Reiner said a small celebration at a friend’s house should be OK if everyone is vaccinated and boosted and has tested negative before the party.

My stance has always been if you have comorbidities, just flat out fear covid, a smoker, overweight by several lbs, very old, then yes you should seriously consider the vaccine.
If your young, healthy, in good shape, you don't necessarily need it. YOUR CHOICE. NOT THE GOVT, NOT YOUR EMPLOYER.
My entire family has had covid, some twice. My children, grand children, in-laws, sister, the only hospitalization was my son's father in law. It was precautionary as he has had heart surgeries. He got through it fine. Nobody vaccinated, except me. Lucky? Maybe. Tend to believe genetics play a big role. NOT EVERYBODY NEEDS THE BOOST FROM VACCINE.
Vaccine NO LONGER stops the spread. Very obvious. Does help prevent hospitalizations and deaths. Also chance the vaccine could harm you. Longshot but why take that chance if you don't need it?

Reducing the spread???? How's that working out?

"Someone has to say it, and I derive no pleasure from doing so. But here goes:
The Omicron wave is exposing the limits of COVID-19 restrictions, which are clearly failing. These include ferociously debated vaccine passports and masking policies that have done little, if anything, to tame skyrocketing numbers throttling the Northeast. "
We have now arrived at a place where even those ostensibly supportive of mandates are slowly coming around to the realization that there’s only so much that can be done in the face of an airborne virus that’s become more communicable......
"In practice, that means adequately managing risk for those most vulnerable, and contextualizing shock-horror spikes in raw case numbers, while relying on the rapid advances in treatments to blunt COVID’s worst effects as people move about, hopefully less encumbered by restrictions.
“Beyond vaccines, treatment options are becoming more available," Georgetown University health law professor Rik Mehta told Yahoo Finance Live on Monday. "That will keep people that are vaccinated and unvaccinated out of the hospitals, and from developing severe infection. That’s going to be a game changer for this.”
Look how much and how long it takes to finally realize the obvious!!!

Spain surpasses 100,000 Covid-19 cases in a single day
Spain reported 100,760 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, the first time since the pandemic began that it has surpassed 100,000 cases in a single day, the country’s health ministry reported.
Wednesday's figure also set a record for the second consecutive day of the highest number of new cases in a 24-hour reporting period. Tuesday’s figure of 99,671 new cases was double the previous record, which was set just last week, on Dec. 21, the ministry reported.
Spanish officials have said the rapidly-spreading Omicron variant is to blame for the spikes in cases.
Spain’s infection rate on Wednesday of 1,508 cases per 100,000 population, over 14 days, was up from 1,360 cases per 100,000 reported on Tuesday.
Officials said the heavy caseload is especially putting extra pressure on the public neighborhood health clinics, but not as much on the hospitals as earlier in the pandemic. Covid-19 cases now occupy 19.1 percent of intensive care beds in Spanish hospitals, up from 18.7 percent in Tuesday’s report.

Pfizer CEO and most doctors agree that new pills and covid treatments are no substitute for vaccines. Risky to rely on expensive treatments that only work in a narrow window early in the disease. But often, too many people avoid healthcare until critically ill especially the uninsured. That is one of the reasons why US has the most unaffordable healthcare system in the world. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Vaccines, masks and public health measures are still the safest and most effective ways to reduce severe illness.

I bet they wouldn't feel that way if Pfizer had created any of said treatments.

Pfrizer's anti-viral pills have been approved by US and UK for covid treatment. According to Stat Harris poll, 91% of vaccinated people are willing to take these pills compared to 52% of unvaccinated people.

True. Unfortunately being uninsured - most often due to affordability vs. net income - results in a lot of unnecessary deaths for that reason

Nine states and DC have mask mandates. They account for 28% of the US population and had 31% of COVID cases recorded for yesterday. Many of these states have had these mandates in place for months.
You keep believing.

Could be right, could be wrong. Take a look at Florida's covid levels; https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/florida/ Focus on the "Daily New Cases" graph. Notice that last yr in late June/July/Aug they had a surge, much larger now. Another southern state, Louisiana; https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/louisiana/ Notice same type of surge last yr in Jun/July/August. Now let's take a northern state; https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/new-york/ Notice no summer surges, if you look at other northern states you see the same thing. I believe it's indoor activity driving the surge. Down south, hot summer months, many inside with a/c on. Then in the north it starts Oct/Nov/Dec with cold temps and schooling (universities) forcing folks indoors. Then January it really explodes as extreme cold forces more indoors. Expecting it to really take off this fall in the north. This southern surge a BIG WARNING SIGN. Delta much worse, numbers will be much higher.
Enough said.

Tomorrow I'll hang out in a Nevada casino watching smokers with their masks down filling their lungs with poison while drink gals wearing worthless rhinestone masks remind everyone to keep those masks up!! Unless you get a drink from her and tip, then drop your mask and enjoy! Nevermind that slot machine touch screen and buttons that hasn't been cleaned in at least a day or two.
They were packed tonight, I stayed away.
Also carry disinfectant wipes to clean the slots I play.
Nothing like following the science.
