Melo like your lean with the Memp/Port game. 

Mavin/Melo just would like your take when handicapping a game like Memp/Port.  How do you feel when a team (Memp) has one home game sandwiched between away trips.  Memp returning from 2 game trip, plays one game at home then out west for 3 more. Does it matter or just another home game?

I have been tailing Mavin's bets since the creation of this thread back on December 20. In most cases, his analysis made perfect sense and I felt no reason to hesitate backing him.

However, I must admit that the Wsh-Bkn Over is kind of head-scratcher to me. This is a confrontation between the two slowest-paced teams in the NBA. Over its last seven games, Washington has played in games with combined scores of 168, 183, 171, 164 and 170. Despite their ugly record, the Wizards are still 10th in terms of overall defence. I just feel that it could be a real struggle for both teams to reach low 90s.

Mavin, please help me understand the logic behind this wager. It has a a little puzzled TBH.

OK, so first of all about the money management: I was asked here what should be the Unit size for 1500$ bankroll and the answer was 75$. The next question was - is not that too much? The answer is  - NO. Next person feeling like asking that question - please read through the thread. There is a reason for keeping this single thread. That is in order to FORCE you to read through to find answers for your questions as almost all the subjects about the money management, picking criteria etc have already been addresses. So, if I put an effort in writing them and the very well respected people in this thread put an effort discussing those issues - the least the new visitors to this thread can do is make an effort to read it. Otherwise you will never become an independent and self confident sports handicappers and you would remain simply a gamblers. I know that's a lot to read. Take it easy, slowly, nor me or Vegas is not running anywhere soon.

SportsMavin, interesting pick. I would love have an idea of your methodology here. I hate to be on the opposite side of you, but I have the Clippers -190.

The way I see it, the Lakers showed their true colors their last game vs. Philadelphia. All their players were finally back, and they were at home, vs. an inferior opponent (supposedly). If they wanted to keep any hope at all alive of having home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, this is a game they had to have. And they lost.

Kobe is still on top of his game, but it is hard to win in the NBA these days with just one great player. Teams are young, fast, and deep. The Lakers are none of those, and thus they are just another team, who happens to have many championships, many fans, and a very recognizable brand name that is associated with winning.

Meanwhile, the Clippers have hit the skids, losing two in a row after winning 17 straight. It was not hard to see these losses coming however, as the Clippers had not shown to be great on the the road against good home teams. In fact, between the two of us, we called them both   so I can truly say that their losses were not unpredictable. They were on the road in tough places to play against good opponents who were highly motivated, while for the Clippers they knew they had bigger fish to fry down the road, and they knew they were not going undefeated the rest of the regular season.

Which brings us to tonight's game. The Clippers have had this game circled on their calendar for a while. In fact, one small factor in the reason why I picked the Nuggets to beat the Clippers the other night was the look-ahead factor. In an 82-game schedule, as we all see on a nightly basis, there is no way teams can get up for every game. Lou Holtz says that "the game before a big game and the game after a big game, you are not going to get the best out of your team." It's just human nature, and we saw it with the Nuggets last night. Teams put more emphasis on the games that they will get more credit for winning. When it comes to assessing the level of motivation a team has going into a game, I think this is a very important factor to look at.

Tonight is a game where the Clippers want to show everyone who the best team in L.A. is, for those who don't already know.

The line is so low because 1) bettors are down on the Clippers because of the last two games (which were totally different situations), and 2) the Lakers lines almost always give the Lakers too much credit, due mostly to them being so popular, and the perception that they are still close to as good a team as they were two to three years ago.

The Lakers might well have had this one circled for a while as well, but it doesn't matter. As long as you can count on the Clippers coming out motivated, they are going to win a very high percentage of the time on their home floor vs. inferior competition (i.e. tonight). I've been looking forward to this one for a while. Should be fun. Just wanted to share my thoughts. Good day.
