Braves vs Red Sox Picks and Predictions: Floodgates Stay Open in Boston

The Braves and Red Sox combined for 16 runs on Tuesday night and we expect more of the same tonight with Nick Pivetta toeing the rubber for Boston. While we expect Atlanta to win, Rafael Devers will do some damage and is worth a look on the prop market.

The Atlanta Braves added to the Boston Red Sox’s misery, handing them a 9-7 extra-inning defeat on Tuesday. Now, the last-place Red Sox will try and get a split in this two-game interleague series.

The Braves send Kyle Wright to the mound while Boston counters with Nick Pivetta. The run line might be the play with a struggling Pivetta, who hasn’t gotten a win since June 24.

Braves vs Red Sox betting preview

Starting pitchers

Kyle Wright (13-5, 3.22 ERA): Wright had his four-game winning streak snapped last Thursday when the New York Mets got to him for six runs on seven hits in six innings. Before that loss, however, Wright was on fire, winning six of his previous seven starts. He posted a 2.64 ERA in the month of July and the 26-year-old right-hander picked up 32 strikeouts during that stretch.

Nick Pivetta (8-8, 4.51 ERA): As hot as Wright has been, Pivetta has been equally as cold. The 29-year-old righty has not won a game since June 24 and has picked up three losses since then. Pivetta he allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings in his most recent start against the Royals. He hasn’t gotten through the sixth inning since June 29.

Braves vs Red Sox picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Run line analysis

The Braves have the opportunity to get a sweep in this two-game interleague series and are sending out Kyle Wright, one of their best pitchers, to get the job done. What Wright can’t do, the bullpen should be able to finish as the defending champs rank second in saves with 37.

Ironically, Wright was the starting pitcher when Boston got its only win against Atlanta this season. That was three months ago, back when the Red Sox were actually relevant.

Now, they are mired in last place in the American League East and have lost four of their last five games, including three out of four to the Kanas City Royals.

With the Red Sox starting Nick Pivetta, who has struggled over the last month, it doesn’t look very encouraging for Boston to earn a split in this abbreviated set at Fenway. Pivetta had a 9.38 ERA in July and has watched it climb from 3.23 in June to 4.51 currently.

The Red Sox have a better batting average than the Braves at .253, but Atlanta leads them in just about every other category. They are fifth in runs, the Red Sox are 11th. The Braves are second in home runs, and Boston is 18th.

Atlanta has won five of its last six interleague games and is 5-1 against American League teams with a losing record.

The Red Sox are 2-9 in their last 11 Game 2 of a series and are 3-7 in their last 10 against a team with a winning record.

With these teams heading in opposite directions, the Braves should not only win tonight but do so by at least a couple of runs considering the mismatch on the mound.

Prediction: Braves -1.5 (+110 at BetMGM)

Over/Under analysis

In Tuesday’s game, the teams reached the total of 6.5 by the third inning. Oddsmakers bumped that number for Wednesday’s game to 9.5, but I wouldn’t let that shy you away from the Over.

Atlanta has hit the Over in six consecutive games and is 7-3 in its last 10. The Red Sox are 5-5 in their last 10. In those games, however, they have allowed opponents to score four or more runs eight times.

The Braves are fourth in runs with 531, averaging 4.8 runs per game. In their three games vs. Boston, they have scored 21 runs.

Atlanta is also second in home runs with 168 and third baseman Austin Riley is third in the majors with 30 of them on his own. With Boston's propensity to serve up the long ball (they rank ninth in homers allowed), there could be added fireworks coming off the Braves' bats.

The Over is 4-0 for the Braves in their last four when their opponent allows five or more runs in the previous game. The Over is also 5-0 in the team’s last five interleague games.

For the Red Sox, the Over is 4-0 in their last four games following a loss and is 4-0 in their last four after allowing five or more runs in the previous game.

Pivetta has allowed three or more runs in five of his last six games, including three starts where he gave up seven, six, and seven runs, respectively. This season, Pivetta has allowed 62 runs in 123 2-3 innings. In what started like a belated breakout campaign, Pivetta has regressed since the end of June, looking more like the pitcher who posted an 8.27 ERA in his first four outings on the season.

He's also allowed seven home runs in his last 29 innings, which bodes well for Atlanta's homer-happy offense. Grab the Over.

Prediction: Over 9.5 (-105 at Caesars)

Best bet

As bad as the Red Sox have been over the last six weeks, third baseman Rafael Devers has been one of the lone bright spots.

The 25-year-old was out for 10 games with hamstring inflammation but returned a week ago and hit a home run against the Houston Astros.

When Devers faced Atlanta pitcher Wright on May 10, he hit a grand slam in the second inning.

Devers leads the Red Sox in home runs (24), batting average (.310), and RBI (60) and ranks seventh in MLB with 221 total bases — just one behind the likes of Freddie Freeman and Pete Alonso. Only Aaron Judge has accumulated more total bases in the AL than the Boston third baseman.

I like Devers to get at least two total bases and at even money, the odds are right.

Pick: Rafael Devers Over 1.5 total bases (+100)
