The Dodgers have had trouble with LHP this season, and Matthew Boyd will be able to hold them at bay to help secure a win for the Cubbies.

After a wild extra-innings victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at home on Tuesday, the Chicago Cubs will look to seal this series with another victory tonight.

With a surging left-hander taking the ball and L.A.’s pitching situation up in the air, my Dodgers vs Cubs predictions will cover why Chicago is undervalued here at Wrigley.

Without further ado, let’s hand out some MLB picks for Wednesday, April 23.

Dodgers vs Cubs prediction

My Dodgers vs Cubs best bet: Cubs moneyline (-115 at DraftKings)

Matthew Boyd has picked up right where he left off in his brief 2024 campaign with the Cleveland Guardians, beginning his tenure with the Chicago Cubs by pitching to a 2.01 ERA in four starts. He’s been nails, eating plenty of innings and pitching to very friendly contact at just a 28.1% hard-hit rate.

This has been an area where the Los Angeles Dodgers struggle, ranking just 26th in OPS to fly-ball pitchers in the early going. Although the split wasn’t quite this drastic a year ago, it’s still one which favoured ground-ballers heavily in 2024.

Yes, Boyd’s been a roughly average pitcher in terms of strikeouts and walks, but this should suit him quite well here. To put a cherry on top, the Dodgers are just 18th in wRC+ to lefties this year and will try to muscle the ball out of an unfriendly home run park in Chicago.

It’s really anyone’s guess what the Dodgers elect to do here from a pitching standpoint, but with an off day ahead of them, you’d assume the entire bullpen will be available — if they don’t call someone up prior to the game to eat innings.

So, it’s with caution that I’ll go ahead and grab the Cubs here on the moneyline. They rank second in wRC+ this season and have excelled in all three important aspects of the game with solid strikeout and walk numbers next to a splendid .197 Isolated Power.

Furthermore, the back-end of this Dodgers bullpen has been suspect all year, and I’d have to side with the offense which profiles much better heading into this one.

Dodgers vs Cubs same-game parlay (SGP)

Cubs moneyline

Matthew Boyd 2+ walks allowed

Matthew Boyd 6+ strikeouts

We’ll do the best with what we’ve got here, focusing on Boyd’s performance. He’s walked at least two batters in three of his four starts, and against a very patient Dodgers team that’s likely to become a problem.

I do think he can have some success with the swing-and-miss, however, given the Dodgers own a 24.3% strikeout rate against lefties thus far, and a middling mark of 22.9% for the year. Boyd is just a couple weeks removed from striking out a season-high seven against this same Dodgers team, and on the night he also walked three batters — making this one seem all the more attainable.
