Starting pitchers

Tony Gonsolin (0-0, 2.77 ERA): Gonsolin, who was on the IL to begin the season with a shoulder injury, will make his fifth start of the year and is coming off his longest outing yet. He pitched four innings of one-run ball against the Chicago Cubs on June 25 and struck out a season-high seven batters. Gonsolin isn’t going to be asked to do too much in this game, as Los Angeles would surely take another four innings of solid work out of him before turning to the bullpen. Considering that he hasn’t faced many of the hitters in Washington’s lineup, the element of surprise is on his side.

Patrick Corbin (5-6, 5.33 ERA): Corbin has not lived up to his massive contract over the last two years. The lefty has, however, been a bit better as of late. Corbin has turned in three consecutive quality starts for the Nationals, and he pitched five innings of three-run ball before that streak. The only problem is that he gave up six earned runs against this Dodgers team earlier in the year.

Moneyline pick

Corbin was absolutely miserable the last time he pitched against this Dodgers team. That was his first start of the year, and the lefty gave up six earned runs in 4 1-3 innings of work. He followed up that start by giving up nine earned runs in two innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Those two outings completely skewed his numbers for the season, but the 31-year-old has been a lot better lately.

Corbin has turned in four productive starts in a row coming into this game, and he now gets a Dodgers team that has scored three or fewer runs in three of its last four games. Don’t be surprised if Corbin comes out and gives the Dodgers a hard time here.

Gonsolin, meanwhile, has been extremely productive, as both a starter and reliever, throughout the course of his brief MLB career. However, the Nats just scored 15 runs in a win over the Rays yesterday, and they come into this game with wins nine of their last 11 contests.

Their offense has been excellent in that span, and they really should be able to get to Gonsolin. He just isn’t anything special on the mound and Washington has a number of dangerous sluggers who can do damage.

PREDICTION: Nationals (+118)

Over/Under pick

The Nationals are one of the best teams in the league against right-handed pitching, so don’t be surprised if they score five or six runs in this game.

Gonsolin is a solid pitcher but he doesn’t have the type of stuff required to completely shut this Nationals team down. Guys like Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber (who hit 16 homers with a 1.122 OPS in June), and Juan Soto can all contribute on the scoreboard in this one, but that doesn’t mean the Over will hit.

Corbin has really started to put it together on the mound recently, and the Dodgers are miserable against lefties. Don’t be shocked if Corbin gives up two or three runs in an excellent start, making it very likely the Under cashes.

PREDICTION: Under 9.5 (-110)
