The Texas Rangers will look to avoid a series sweep on Sunday afternoon when they face off against the Seattle Mariners from T-Mobile Park.
Nathan Eovaldi will take the mound for the Rangers, posting a 2.29 ERA and a 1-1 record so far. The Mariners will hand the ball to Logan Gilbert, whose 25 strikeouts are among the most in the majors.
Our Rangers vs. Mariners predictions and MLB picks dive into Gilbert’s dominance over his AL West rivals and explain why one particular Texas hitter won’t be thrilled to step into the batter’s box.
Rangers vs Mariners prediction
My Rangers vs Mariners best bet: Leody Tavares Under 0.5 hits (-117 at Caesars)
Logan Gilbert has been outstanding through his first three starts of 2025. He’s allowed just eight hits and five earned runs over 17 2/3 IP while striking out 25 batters. He’s also issued just three free passes.
Unfortunately for him, his offense hasn’t helped a ton while he’s been on the mound as he’s yet to record a victory this season, but he’s more than done his part, posting an xwOBA of just .241 and an xSLG of just .314 so far.
Sunday sees him facing a Texas Rangers team he’s had great success against in his career. Current Texas hitters are batting just .178 against him in their careers, with only 30 hits in 182 plate appearances. When Gilbert does give up a hit, it tends to be for extra bases — in fact, he’s given up eight doubles and seven bombs in that timeframe.
Two of those home runs have come at the hands of Leody Taveras. The switch-hitting outfielder has no other hits against Gilbert, with five strikeouts and a walk in 16 plate appearances.
This season has been one to forget for Taveras. He had a pair of two-hit games against the Cubs earlier this week, yet his batting average is still barely north of the Mendoza Line. He ranks below the 10th percentile in xBA, xSLG, exit velocity, chase rate, and strikeout rate, and in the Bottom 1% in xwOBA this year.
It’s why he’s still mired at the bottom of the order for the Rangers, and is unlikely to get a hit on Sunday. He'll likely see no more than three at-bats in this game, if that. In fact, he was pinch-hit for in Friday’s game, when Kevin Pillar took his place to lead off the seventh inning.
Gilbert is likely to pitch to him twice, and I don’t see him giving up another home run to a hitter whose average exit velocity this season is below 85 mph. It’s highly unlikely Taveras gets a hit of any kind and I’ll gladly snag -117 odds for that outcome.
Caesars QuickPick: Our Rangers vs Mariners same-game parlay (SGP)
Gilbert has struck out opposing hitters at a 38.5% rate this season, and he’s facing a Texas team whose 32.7% chase rate is the highest in the majors. The Rangers also have swung at the second-highest rate of first pitches, just behind Detroit and ahead of Oakland, against whom Gilbert had 10 and eight strikeouts, respectively.
The Mariners haven’t been the most consistent hitting team this season, but the bats have woken up with 21 runs scored in their last three games. Nathan Eovaldi has posted solid numbers, but he’s also been hit fairly hard and has an xwOBA of .318 on the season.
The Rangers have also seen their bullpen unable to close out games, which’ll be the case here. Gilbert will give them a strong outing and Seattle will get the series sweep behind some timely hitting.
