Max Scherzer (9-4, 2.75 ERA): Scherzer was outstanding in his first start in Dodger Blue. The three-time Cy Young Award winner limited a very good Astros lineup to two runs on five hits while striking out 10 over seven innings. Now he goes against a familiar foe in the Phillies.
Aaron Nola (7-6, 4.49 ERA): Nola was having a solid season for the Phillies, but things have been a little rocky since the end of June. The right-hander has allowed four or more runs — and five or more hits — in four of his last six starts, surrendering seven dingers over that span.

The Phillies have used their eight-game winning streak to leapfrog the New York Mets and take over first place in the National League East. Bryce Harper has been a big part of fueling the Phillies run, as since the All-Star break he is mashing for a .370 batting average and a 1.256 OPS — and has hit four dingers during this eight-game winning streak.
But Harper and his teammates have to deal with Scherzer, who has limited opponents to two earned runs or fewer in 13 of his last 15 starts and is holding them to a .175 batting average over that span. That includes three starts against the Phillies (when he was a member of the Nationals), where he held them to three runs on 10 hits while striking out 22 batters over 18 2-3 innings.
With Nola struggling a bit lately and the Dodgers having a big edge in bullpens (L.A. ranks sixth in ERA, compared to 20th for Philly), it’s hard for me to fade Scherzer in this spot.

Straight up: This total seems wrong. An Over/Under of 8.5 is just too high for a game where Scherzer is pitching and Nola, while he has had his ups and downs, is more than capable of pitching well in this one.
Even at this point in his career, Scherzer is having one of his best seasons yet. The right-hander’s 2.75 ERA is the third-best of his career and his 0.89 WHIP is the best he’s ever had.
