MLB Player Props & Best Bets Today for 4-23: Webb of Intrigue

Logan Webb pitches deep into games almost every time his turn comes around in the Giants rotation. This holds especially true when he pitches at home, making the Over on his outs-recorded prop appealing today.

Logan Webb is an anomaly in today's game, pitching deep into his starts on an almost automatic basis, especially at Oracle Park.

My favorite MLB player props for Wednesday, April 23, expect a strong showing from the right-hander, plus a look at James Wood and Emerson Hancock.

MLB props for April 23

James Wood Over 1.5 total bases (+130 at bet365)

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood hits the ever-loving crap out of the ball. He ranks in the 92nd percentile or better in expected slugging, average exit velocity, barrel rate, hard-hit percentage, and bat speed. That he's doing as well as he is without fully squaring up the ball (yet) is impressive.

Just 22, Wood has seven home runs and five doubles in 23 games this season, and is coming off a three-hit game against the Baltimore Orioles. Tonight, he gets a crack at Baltimore starter Tomoyuki Sugano, who simply does not miss bats.

The 35-year-old is in his debut MLB season (technically a rookie, but he has a full career in Japan behind him) and has recorded just eight strikeouts in 21 innings. He's avoided runs, as his 3.43 ERA shows, but he's getting profoundly lucky (.261 BABIP and 6.42 expected ERA). He's also been tagged for four long balls already.

Wood is only striking out in 26% of his plate appearances, which is an improvement on his rookie season and how he typically fared in the minors. This line opened at +140 and has already shifted to +130, which is still a buy, as I'd take this all the way to even money.

Logan Webb Over 18.5 outs (+133 at Caesars)

Logan Webb has one of the longest leashes among MLB starting pitchers, and while the San Francisco Giants ace hasn't recorded an out past the sixth inning in either of his last two outings, both came on the road. Oracle Park has been a haven for the right-hander, and he completed seven frames in his lone start there this season, allowing zero runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts against the Cincinnati Reds.

Webb made 15 starts in San Francisco in 2024, finishing seven innings in 10 of them.

The Milwaukee Brewers are not an elite offense despite some top-end talent. And besides, Webb has such a fantastic infield defense behind him that it boosts his chances of pitching deep and efficiently.

The Bat X projects him for 19.3 outs, giving our MLB picks tremendous value at +133 for a pitcher who typically lasts deep into his home starts.

Emerson Hancock Over 5.5 hits allowed (-110 at bet365)

Going Over 5.5 hits seems like a tall order, but not in this instance. Seattle Mariners right-hander Emerson Hancock does not possess overpowering stuff. Across parts of three seasons, he owns a 14.3% strikeout rate and was only marginally better at Triple-A in 2024.

And while the Mariners have kept him on a short leash — just 5 2/3 innings across two starts this season — he's allowed 12 hits in limited action. This will not serve him well against the Boston Red Sox, who have several sluggers who measure up well in this matchup.

Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran and Rafael Devers each crush from the left side while Alex Bregman and Kristian Campbell have shown little issues against same-sided pitchers.

Hancock also doesn't issue many walks, so the damage is generally done when the bat meets the ball. The Detroit Tigers chased him after 2/3 of an inning in his first appearance, drumming up seven hits in the process.

His outs-recorded prop is set at 14.5, so the Under at +130 is appealing but could be a bit sweaty. While some teams are playing their getaway game, the Mariners and Red Sox have a matinee on Thursday, so Seattle could keep Hancock out a bit longer to preserve the bullpen, especially after Bryce Miller failed to complete the fifth on Tuesday night.

A longer outing would also give the Over on his hits-allowed prop a little more breathing room, too, giving us multiple avenues to cash.
