Cole hard truth
Two of the worst teams in the majors face off in Oakland on Saturday afternoon with the A's sending Cole Irvin to the mound as they host the Royals.
Irvin is coming off a loss to the Guardians where he scattered six hits and four runs through 5 2-3 innings. However, he had allowed more than two runs jsut once in his previous seven starts. In five starts at home inside the pitcher-friendly confines of Ringcentral Coliseum, he has pitched to a minuscule 1.61 ERA.
The Royals have been among the worst hitting teams in the majors ranking 26th in OPS (.668) and 27th in scoring with 3.83 runs per game. They plate just 2.48 runs per game through the first six innings and with Irvin rarely pitching deeper than the sixth inning, we're taking the Under 2.5 on his earned runs allowed.
Pick: Cole Irvin Under 2.5 earned runs (-120)
Plundering the Pirates
Giants outfielder Luis Gonzalez has struggled a bit this month but he jacked a solo home run last night and has picked up at least one hit in eight of his last 11 games. The rookie is now batting .303 in 45 games this year, so it's a bit surprising to get the Over 0.5 hits for Gonzalez at -140 this afternoon.
It's not like San Fran is going up against a strong pitcher either, with the Pirates sending journeyman Jose Quintana to the rubber.
Quintana has pitched to a solid 3.53 ERA in 12 starts this year, but has an expected ERA of 4.87 with an expected batting average of .289 which suggests that regression is around the corner. Betting on Gonzalez to get at least one hit at this price is well worth it.
Pick: Luis Gonzalez Over 0.5 hits (-140)
Raf infection
Boston's Rafael Devers continues to mash the ball, and while his four-game home run streak ended on Thursday he still picked up a pair of hits and drove in two runs last night. The third baseman claimed his first Silver Slugger award last year and has been even better this season, leading the majors with 160 total bases in 64 games.
Today, Devers and the Red Sox host the Cardinals with Dakota Hudson on the mound. Hudson has been a reliable starter for the Cards, pitching to a 3.29 ERA across a dozen starts, but his analytics have been far less impressive. He's among the bottom third of pitchers in the majors when it comes to hard hit percentage, average exit velocity, and xERA, and he has a very tough time making batters miss.
Devers is seventh in the majors with a slugging percentage of .613 and has been even better against righties like Hudson, boasting a .637 slugging percentage. With Devers logging at least two total bases in 10 of his last 15 games we're taking the Over 1.5 on his total bases tonight.
Pick: Rafael Devers Over 1.5 total bases (-125)
