Much like Game 1 of this series Monday – a 5-4 Boston victory – this moneyline jumped the fence at TwinSpires, with Los Angeles opening a slim -110 favorite and the price flipping to Boston -124. As of 6:45 p.m. ET, the Angels are taking 55 percent of bets and the Red Sox 64 percent of money. The total is down a full run to 8.5, with 73 percent of bets/70 percent of cash on the Under.

Red Sox vs Angels betting preview

Starting pitchers

Nathan Eovaldi (9-4, 3.41 ERA): Eovaldi has been the best of Boston's mediocre rotation, pitching to a 1.20 WHIP and an opponent batting average of .256 through 17 starts. Over his last two outings, the right-hander has allowed just one run through 14 2-3 innings.

Shohei Ohtani (3-1, 3.60 ERA): The major league's home run leader hasn't just been smashing balls out of the park, he has also been the Angels' most reliable starter, at least until his previous outing last Wednesday. Ohtani came into that contest against the Yankees with a 2.58 ERA through his first 11 starts of the year but was pulled midway through the first inning after getting shredded for seven runs.

Moneyline pick

The Red Sox are 10-1 in their last 11 contests and hold a 4.5-game lead atop the AL East with a 54-32 record. Despite last night's loss, the Angels are still 14-6 in their previous 20 contests at home.

At 42-42, the Angels are barely treading water but a surge during the second half of the season, especially with the expected return of three-time AL MVP Mike Trout, could push them in the Wild Card race.

Eovaldi will toe the rubber for the BoSox and the veteran has looked sharp over the last several weeks, pitching to a 2.13 ERA through 42 1-3 innings in his last seven starts.

The Angels will give the ball to Ohtani, who has pitched to a 3.60 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 12 starts this season. Ohtani recently became the first player in MLB history selected as both a pitcher and position player for the All-Star game.

The Red Sox have been one of the top offensive teams in the bigs, rankings third in the majors in scoring (5.12 runs per game) and OPS (.761). The Angels are nipping at Boston's heels in both categories, ranking sixth in runs per game (4.94) and fifth in OPS (.759). That said, there are a couple of reasons we think L.A. might not have its usual success at the dish tonight.

Ohtani and his 31 homers have powered the Angels offense in Trout's absence but the Japanese slugger hasn't been hitting well on days when he's also on the mound. In nine starts as a pitcher since the start of May, Ohtani didn't bat in two of those games while going just 4-for-18 with zero home runs in the other seven contests.

A big reason for the Halos' terrific offensive production at Angel Stadium is that they rank second in the majors with 1.64 home runs per game at home. However, Eovaldi has been the best starter in the majors at preventing long balls, surrendering just four homers in 97 2-3 innings pitched this season. Back the BoSox on the moneyline.

PREDICTION: Boston (-115)

Over/Under pick

With two-high powered offenses facing off you might consider the Over the obvious play but we're not so sure. Eovaldi's ability to prevent hard hits and his recent strong play should keep the Angels' power-hitters in check.

Ohtani, meanwhile, is coming off a rough performance on the road but has sizzled as a starter at home this season. He has pitched to a 1.73 ERA with an opponent batting average of .190 through 36 1-3 innings across seven starts at Angel Stadium.

With the Under cashing in four of the last five meetings between these teams and the Red Sox going 5-2-1 to the Under in Eovaldi's last eight starts, bet the Under tonight.

PREDICTION: Under 9 (-113)
