Red Sox vs White Sox betting preview
Starting pitchers
Nick Pivetta (2-4, 4.22 ERA): Pivetta is coming off one of the best starts of his career, as he struck out eight and gave up only one run in a complete game against the Houston Astros. The righty has now allowed only two earned runs over his last 22 innings, and he seems to really be hitting his stride in Boston. Pivetta has always possessed some real talent, but he hasn’t been able to put it together consistently.
Dylan Cease (4-1, 3.09 ERA): Like Pivetta, Cease is also coming off of a really nice performance. He struck out nine in 5 2-3 shutout innings against the Kansas City Royals, and he has actually had at least eight strikeouts in seven of his eight starts this season. Cease just has otherworldly stuff and is a threat to dominate whenever he toes the rubber, and he’ll be looking to do exactly that here.

Red Sox vs White Sox picks and predictions
Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.
Moneyline analysis
The last time Cease faced this Red Sox team, the righty gave up only one earned run and struck out eight in five innings of work. Chicago ended up winning that game in extra innings, but Cease was outdueled by Pivetta.
The Red Sox starter hurled six innings of shutout ball and also racked up eight Ks of his own. Pivetta has also been a better starter on the road throughout his career, so the move to Chicago shouldn’t hurt him too much here.
This also happens to be a night game, and Pivetta is 2-1 with a 3.28 ERA in evening games this season. That’s a heck of a lot better than his 5.50 ERA and 0-3 record during the day.
Boston also happens to be the team with better hitting splits against right-handed pitching, as the Red Sox are seventh in the league in slugging percentage, ninth in isolated power, and 10th in weighted runs created against righties. That’s also true even though Boston’s lineup hasn’t been performing up to expectations early in the year.
With that in mind, the Red Sox are probably a little more trustworthy at the plate in this one. The White Sox are actually right near the bottom of the league in all of the previously mentioned categories.
Overall, this is just a match-up between two pitchers that are really pitching well right now, but the Red Sox are the better value play.
Prediction: Red Sox moneyline (+150 at Caesars)
Over/Under analysis
With Pivetta currently in the midst of one of the best stretches of his professional career, it’s hard to see the righty really getting beat up against an offense that hasn’t really found a way to get it going this season.
Pivetta also threw six shutout innings against the White Sox back on May 7, so he knows how to get the job done against this lineup. Meanwhile, Cease is also pitching well right now, and the 26-year-old likely won’t get lit up here.
These two starters will be looking to turn in another pitcher’s duel tonight, which is why the Under looks like the right play. It also doesn’t hurt that Boston is just 15th in MLB in runs scored this season, while Chicago is down at 27th.
The Under is also 12-5-4 in the last 21 games that Boston has played as an underdog. On top of that, it’s 6-1 in the last seven games that Chicago has played against right-handed starters.
Prediction: Under 8 (-115 at FanDuel)
Best bet
Cease’s strikeout total for tonight is at 7.5, which makes it hard not to like the Over in this one. As previously mentioned, the righty has struck out at least eight batters in all but one of his starts this season. He has also had two games in which he has reached 11 strikeouts this year, and one of those games was an outing in which he pitched only four innings.
Cease just has nasty stuff, and hitters have a lot of trouble making contact against him.
This will also be the second time Cease has faced the Red Sox, and he had eight strikeouts in five innings of one-run ball the last time he faced them. That was actually a game that was played at Fenway Park, yet Cease has 11 more strikeouts when pitching at home this season. He has done that despite only pitching 1 1-3 innings more at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Boston doesn’t exactly have a high strikeout rate or anything, but this is more about what Cease is capable of than the matchup. He’s capable of making anybody look foolish at the plate, even in defeat. He had a start against the New York Yankees this year in which he gave up six runs in four innings but still had 11 strikeouts.
Pick: Dylan Cease Over 7.5 strikeouts (-138 at FanDuel)
