The Los Angeles Dodgers host the Detroit Tigers for Game 3 of their series after a wild game on Friday night in which the Dodgers captured an 8-5 victory thanks to Mookie Betts’ walk-off 10th-inning home run.

Marquee offseason acquisition Roki Sosaki toes the rubber for a second time in a Dodgers uniform and hopes for better results after a shaky outing in the Tokyo Series.

Sosaki’s debut was troubling for a few reasons, so my Tigers vs. Dodgers predictions and MLB picks target an opposing Detroit bat in the player prop market.

My Tigers vs Dodgers best bet: Riley Greene Over 1.5 hits + runs + RBI (+130 at bet365)

Calling the Roki Sosaki signing a bust after one outing would be absurdly foolish. The 23-year-old made waves as an amateur in Japan for good reason, and his golden arm will likely be very valuable in the Big Show.

Still, it’s hard to label his debut in the Tokyo Series anything but disappointing. He only threw 56 pitches but still managed to walk five batters during three innings of work, allowing a single earned run.

It’ll be difficult to achieve consistent success at this level as a starter if he only has two offerings in his pitch mix. Sosaki relied heavily on his four-seamer (66.1%) and splitter (26.8%) against the Cubs, opting for his slider just four times as it’s evidently not a pitch he trusts.

All said, there are some things that the precocious talent needs to work through before actualizing the best version of himself. Perhaps it takes batters a while to figure out his pitch mix and delivery, but I’m expecting growing pains at one point or another.

The one player on the Detroit Tigers who benefits most from Sosaki’s outlook is outfielder Riley Greene, who went 2-for-5 with a double and a run on Friday. The former fifth overall selection in the MLB Draft has destroyed four-seamers in his career (163 wRC+) and posted fantastic results against the splitter a year ago (168 wRC+), making this a wonderful matchup on paper.

He’s a left-handed bat who experienced much greater success against RHP (149 wRC+) than LHP (95 wRC+). The books are offering plus money on Greene exceeding 1.5 hits + runs + RBI, and I’m all ears.

If Sosaki doesn’t pitch deep into the game again, L.A.’s bullpen will be slightly taxed. Alex Vesia and Tanner Scott are likely burned after pitching in the first two games of the series, while five other relievers have thrown in the last two days.

Greene has a favorable offensive profile overall with an 88th percentile xwOBA, 89th percentile xSLG, 90th percentile barrel rate, and 94th percentile average exit velocity. The weather also favors offense with 8-9 mph winds blowing out to center field.

Tigers vs Dodgers same-game parlay (SGP)

Riley Greene Over 1.5 hits + runs + RBI

Reese Olson Over 4.5 strikeouts

Under 8

Right-hander Reese Olson gets the nod for Detroit. There’s a lot to like about the 25-year-old after he posted an ERA below 4.00 in each of his first two campaigns in the Big Leagues. He has five pitches in his arsenal, led by a strong slider. He’s effective against both lefties (3.96 FIP) and righties (3.21 FIP) and doesn’t have concerns regarding his home-road splits.

While facing this Dodgers lineup is never a fun proposition, Olson will have the benefit of a pitcher's umpire (Jeremie Rehak) and an elite pitch framer (Jake Rogers, sixth in catcher framing runs in 2024) behind the plate. Greene’s average fastball velocity was up 1.8 mph in the spring, and he already ranked in the 87th percentile in chase rate and the 75th percentile in whiff rate a year ago, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he starts getting more Ks.

Detroit’s lineup is woefully inadequate on paper outside of Greene, giving me little confidence the Tigers will contribute much in the run-scoring department. This doesn’t look like a blow-up spot for either offense, so I’m grabbing the Under.
