White Sox vs Twins betting preview
Starting pitchers
Lance Lynn (10-3, 2.04 ERA): Lynn has allowed only one earned run in five of his last six trips to the hill, and that other outing was a three-run game in which the White Sox were still able to earn a 6-4 victory. The righty has just been excellent for Chicago all year, and he now faces a Minnesota team that he has faced four times this season. In those games, Lynn is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA.
Bailey Ober (1-1, 4.99 ERA): In three starts against the White Sox this season, Ober is 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA. This looks like a massive mismatch on the mound, and the Twins are going to need Ober to find a way to turn in a productive outing here. For what it’s worth, the righty did allow just three earned runs in five innings of work in a start against Chicago on July 20. Minnesota would likely love another performance like that here.

Moneyline pick
Lynn has been absolutely incredible against the Twins this season, and he has really been borderline unbeatable all year long. However, despite the huge advantage that Chicago appears to have on the mound in this game, the White Sox — who are the much better team to begin with — aren’t favored by as much as you’d think. This game should have a line more like -190 or -200 for Chicago, but that isn’t the case. Overall, this seems like a trap game in which the oddsmakers are begging bettors to take the White Sox.
One of the reasons that might be the case is that Lynn has been a bit worse when pitching on the road this season. And another could be that Ober has settled in and pitched pretty well for Minnesota recently, as the righty has given up only 3.0 runs per game over his last four starts. If he can turn in that type of performance against the White Sox in this one, his team would have a good shot at coming away with a win. In general, the fact that it’s possible makes the Twins a good value in a game like this.
Also, for what it’s worth, Miguel Sano is 4 for 7 with a double and two homers against Lynn in his career, and he could easily change this game with one swing of the bat. Andrelton Simmons, who had a two-hit game on Tuesday, has also had some success against Lynn in the past.
It’s not extremely likely that the Twins will win, but they’re worth taking a small chance on just because of how fishy this line is.
PREDICTION: Twins ML (+142)
Over/Under pick
Lynn has only had one start this season in which he has given up more than three earned runs, which is truly a ridiculous statistic. Having said that, it’s hard to imagine the righty coming out and getting shelled against a weak Minnesota offense.
Lynn could have something of an off night and that would mean giving up three or four runs, giving this Under a great chance to hit. Ober has been a lot more reliable as of late, so it’s just tough to envision this one being too high-scoring. The Under just seems like the smart move here.
PREDICTION: Under 9.0 (-120)
