Uniforms saying Atlanta Hawks will be worn tonight in Minneapolis, but the team will be so shorthanded, they will be the Atlanta Hawks largely in name only. Against the Minnesota Timberwolves and their propensity for letdowns against shorthanded opponents, that does not assure a blowout.

What it does assure is someone under the radar will have to score for Atlanta. My Hawks vs. Timberwolves predictions and NBA picks attempt to figure out who that will be before tip at 8 ET on Monday, January 27.

Hawks vs Timberwolves prediction

My best bet
Dyson Daniels Over 15.5 points (-115 at bet365)

My analysis
No Trae Young. No Jalen Johnson. No Larry Nance Jr. Possibly no De’Andre Hunter. Possibly no Zaccharie Risacher.

Someone will suit up for the Atlanta Hawks tonight, just not necessarily anyone the casual NBA fan will recognize. And someone will still take shots for Atlanta tonight. It's not like the Hawks will turn the ball over on every possession.

Hunter and Rissacher may play. Hunter, in particular, could bounce back from an illness well enough to try to put up a fight tonight, but that's too unreliable to bet on, and with Atlanta looking this thin, Minnesota would be able to focus its defense on Hunter in that scenario.

Looking at usage rates in the last month, the next most likely scorers are Dyson Daniels and Bogdan Bogdanovic, but much of Bogdanovic’s work comes from being set up by Young and Hunter.

So the value should be in Daniels, a third-year guard who has started every game this season and averaged 14.8 points in the last month. Even with Young, Johnson and Hunter largely available in the last month, Daniels has ended 19.1% of possessions when he's on the court. If that ticks up just a touch, and some of Young’s shots becoming Daniels’ attempts make far too much sense, then clearing this points prop should be expected.

He has already cleared this prop in four of his last six games, reaching 20 points in three of those. Daniels’s 13.3 shot attempts per game in the last month could near 20 takes tonight, and that would make it almost a certainty that he'll score at least 16 points.

Hawks vs Timberwolves same-game parlay

Dyson Daniels Over 15.5 points

Jaden McDaniels Over 6.5 rebounds

Timberwolves moneyline

Timberwolves wing Jaden McDaniels has started taking fewer corner 3-pointers, a shocking thought to most in the NBA, and he's finding overall success as a result. He becomes more active in the entire offense when not simply stationed in the corner, and it's not a shot he's particularly adept at, anyway. Greater activity in the offense tends to lead to greater activity everywhere from McDaniels, including on the glass.

Pinpointing an exact shift in his approach is difficult, but let’s note that in the last nine games, McDaniels has upped his scoring by 4.1 points per game compared to the season’s first 36 games while grabbing 7.4 rebounds per game — and clearing this prop in six of the nine games — compared to 4.6 beforehand.

The Timberwolves have gone only 5-4 outright in that stretch, but the losses were all competitive losses to either top-tier teams or the Warriors, while the wins included four blowouts.

Hawks vs Timberwolves spread and Over/Under analysis

  • This spread opened with Minnesota favored by as few as seven points on Sunday afternoon before the Atlanta injury news began to roll out.

  • With the news that Young will be out and that Hunter is questionable, this line quickly rose to -10 by the end of the night and to -10.5 early on Monday morning.

  • This total opened at 224, and, understandably, the news that Young will be out quickly dropped it to 219.5. Monday saw the total drop further to 217.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
