If ever there was a time to actually recommend betting a massive moneyline favorite, it would be the Minnesota Timberwolves at -6,600 today against the Utah Jazz. If Minnesota wins, it avoids the Play-In Tournament. And Utah needs to lose to best its draft positioning, but that is hardly a wager that can be advertised as a “best bet.”
Focusing on Utah’s extensive tanking efforts, however, can shed light on a best bet in my Jazz vs. Timberwolves predictions and NBA picks before tip at 3:30 ET on Sunday, April 13.

My analysis
Some laughs can be had at the Minnesota Timberwolves’ expense when wanting to dismiss the Utah Jazz. These tanking Jazz did beat the Timberwolves on Feb. 28, but a handful of realities distance this afternoon’s regular-season finale from that upset.
First of all, that was in Utah. Second of all, the Jazz were led by John Collins (29 points), Isaiah Collier (14 assists), and Walker Kessler (13 rebounds). None of them are playing today. Lastly, Anthony Edwards did not play in that ugly Timberwolves’ loss, and he will indeed be available today after the NBA rescinded his technical foul from Friday night.
While Johnny Juzang, Kyle Filipowski, and Brice Sensabaugh are all among the 500 best basketball players in the world, they are overmatched against a Minnesota defense needing a win. Furthermore, this is the last game between those young players and their summers. Motivation may be lacking.
It lacked a bit for the Nets on Friday in Minneapolis, another must-win game for the Timberwolves. Brooklyn’s final tanking efforts featured Drew Timme for 40 minutes, Jalen Wilson for 36, and Tosan Evbuomwan for 22. It was not all that shocking that the Nets scored only 16 points in the first quarter and, most notably, 18 in the fourth quarter.
Even garbage time does not lead to reserves pouring in buckets this weekend. Players on those lost teams are just ready to go home. Utah’s youth will convey that early and often today.

The stakes could not be much higher for Minnesota. A win guarantees the Timberwolves have escaped the Play-In Tournament, and that urgency should lead to a Rudy Gobert emphasis. He tends to keep Minnesota on track when the stakes are high, but perhaps focuses are loose.
And Utah will not have much size to slow Gobert. With Kessler, Collins, and Lauri Markkanen all out, the Jazz start Filipowski at center, backed up by Micah Potter and Oscar Tshiebwe. They simply are not strong enough to slow Gobert, an advantage he exposed on Friday against the Nets by scoring 35 points and snagging 11 rebounds.
