The Pistons are back in the playoffs, and tonight they host a Kings team clawing its way back to secure a spot in the Western Conference Play-In Tournament.
My Kings vs Pistons predictions expect another strong scoring performance from Zach LaVine as he leads his team into a must-win matchup on the road.
Read my NBA picks to see why I’m high on LaVine's scoring line and how I'm betting the moneyline for this 7 p.m. tip on Monday, April 7.
Kings vs Pistons prediction
My best bet: Zach LaVine Over 20.5 points (-115 at bet365)
My analysis
Zach LaVine cooked in Sunday’s upset win over Cleveland, scoring a team-high 37 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter. He’ll need to be on his game offensively if he hopes to lead the Sacramento Kings to a second upset victory in as many nights.
Over his last six games, LaVine has averaged 23.2 points, scoring at least 20 in four of them and 21+ three times. That includes back-to-back strong showings with an average of 31 points over the last two.
LaVine has averaged 21.6 points per game since arriving in Sac-Town, dropping 21 at home and 22.1 on the road. He’s scored 21 or more points in nine of 16 on the road with the Kings, and he’s reached that scoring milestone in 14 of 28 games overall with his new team.
Tonight’s matchup with the Detroit Pistons is a familiar one for LaVine. In his seven seasons with Chicago, he averaged 24.8 points against the Pistons across 22 appearances and hit the Over 13 times. LaVine has scored 40 or more points 22 times in his career, and he reached that mark three times against the Pistons — his most against any team — including a career-high 51 in Detroit.
On the season, the Pistons have allowed 21.9 points per game to opposing SGs, but over the last seven, they’ve allowed 26.5 points, good for sixth-most to the position.
LaVine & Co. need a win tonight, and I expect him to be at his best against a team he regularly torched as a member of the Bulls.
Kings vs Pistons same-game parlay
The Pistons have secured a playoff spot, so there’s not much added motivation to win tonight’s matchup. Detroit could move past Milwaukee for the No. 5 seed, but that’s the best they can finish.
Sacramento, on the other hand, is looking to secure a spot in the Western Conference Play-In and needs as many wins as it can get. The Kings’ next two games are against the Nuggets and Clippers, two teams still jockeying for position in a tightly-bunched Western Conference playoff race. Sacramento is the more desperate team, and the Kings have reeled off two straight victories. I’ll back them to win over a banged-up Pistons team that’s lost three of four.
DeMar DeRozan has scored at least 20 points in six straight and in 13 of his last 14 games. He’s reached that mark in 49 of 73 games overall in his first season with Sacramento, and he’ll need to put up some points alongside LaVine to get his team over the hump in Detroit. Like LaVine, DeRozan has a history with the Pistons from his time in Chicago, averaging 24.3 points across 12 games and scoring 20 or more points 10 times.
