March Madness favorites

Duke has been the favorite to win the Big Dance for some time now, and with Cooper Flagg's injury scare in the rearview mirror, the Blue Devils remain the team to beat.

The brutally-tough SEC has two teams looming just behind Duke in Florida and Auburn. Just behind them are the Houston Cougars of the Big 12.

Here’s a closer look at those premium programs, some capable contenders, and a long shot to win March Madness. Check out our list of the best March Madness betting sites when you're ready to make your wager.

Favorites

Duke  Duke Blue Devils

Cooper Flagg leaving Duke's ACC quarterfinal affair against Georgia Tech had the Blue Devils' odds on the move, but with news hitting that he would be available to play in the NCAA Tournament, that movement is behind us.

Duke snagged the top seed in the East Region and proceeded to bulldoze both Mount St. Mary's and Baylor to kick off their tournament.

Florida  Florida Gators

One SEC school ready for whatever March Madness throws at it, Florida snatched the West Region's No. 1 seed after winning the SEC Tournament and is led by one of the best backcourts in basketball.

The Gators play at an up-tempo pace that can wear down foes, especially during the tight turnaround of the tournament. Walter Clayton Jr., in particular, was sharp with 23 points apiece in UF's wins over Norfolk State and UConn.

Auburn  Auburn Tigers

Despite three losses to end the schedule, Auburn claimed the No. 1 seed in the South Region. The Tigers have it all: scoring, defense, coaching, and a deep and talented team with veteran experience to anchor their title chances.

Not only that, but Auburn proved as much in the ultra-competitive SEC. That means the Tigers’ title hopes are forged in fire, having been tested night in and night out.

Contenders

Houston  Houston Cougars

Houston claimed the fourth and final No. 1 seed (Midwest) and has been a staple of the Big Dance for the past decade.

The Cougars are once again primed for a deep run thanks to the top defense in the nation. Offensively, UH puts the game in the sand and is tremendous from beyond the arc.

Live Long Shot

Maryland  Maryland Terrapins

The Terps could be a sleeper selection to make a splash in the bracket this March. Maryland is a Top-10 defense in the land and a Top-30ish offense, which can score the ball in a variety of ways.

The Terrapins have elite-level bigs and sharp shooting guards, promoting inside-out scoring and the ability to generate points off turnovers and transition.

They only have a handful of losses, all of which have come by six points or fewer, and earned a No. 4 seed in the West Region.

To be honest, the opening March Madness odds look pretty much the same year in and year out. Sportsbooks take blind action on the bluebloods of college hoops, so you’ll always find Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas, and a few perennial powerhouse programs at the top of the board.

The Auburn Tigers will likely make anyone holding a NCAA title ticket at +3000 very happy come April 7. The Tigers’ dominance sees the most significant movement from the opening price, currently sitting as near co-favorites with Duke.

Auburn’s SEC rivals, the Alabama Crimson Tide and Florida Gators, saw significant adjustments from their opening odds to win March Madness as well. Even with the Tide’s recent tumble, Alabama went from +2000 to +1200, and the Gators chomped their way from +4000 to +700.

Call it the "Cooper Flagg Effect" if you like, but bettors have been banking big on the Blue Devils all season long. Duke has attracted the highest percentage of total bets as well as the most amount of money wagered on a single team to win the 2025 NCAA Tournament.

"Cooper Flagg’s health is a question mark but we expect action to pour in on Duke if Flagg can play," says Seamus Magee, Trading Manager, BetMGM. "Along with Duke, Florida and Michigan State are teams we don't want to cut down the nets. BetMGM projects this to be the most bet tournament in our history with the sportsbook offering more markets than ever before."
