My analysis
The UAB Blazers are unique. Most small schools lose their best players after a successful season to the transfer portal, but Blazers returned everyone who could return.
That experience and depth didn’t help much against Vermont. They allowed too many triples and didn’t exhibit the same cohesiveness on the offensive end of the floor as they enjoyed last season. The Blazers turned things around in the second half against Vermont, outscoring the Catamounts by 10 in the final 20 minutes. UAB's shots began to fall, but it wasn’t enough to win.
They’ll need to carry their newly found offensive momentum into tonight's game against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, who have plenty of individual experience but not as a group.
The Golden Eagles are coming off an opening-night victory over Bowling Green. They're faster than the Blazers and can score from anywhere. Southern Miss didn’t return a single starter, but it has three current starters with 19 years of collegiate experience.
We’ll see a fast-paced game tonight. Neither defense will lock anyone down, and I expect UAB to come out firing. The Blazers won’t want to face another half-time deficit, so I expect them to let it fly against a smaller Golden Eagles group.
Southern Miss has its offense together, but it will be unable to defend the Blazers' bigs consistently, and that will cause tonight’s game to go Over the number.

UAB allowed 37% from downtown against Vermont. Southern Miss didn’t take many triple attempts on opening night, but I expect the faster play and its solid ball movement to have a strong effect, both inside and outside the arc, to lead to more points.
With that said, I like UAB to win outright. The Blazers are coming off a tough home loss, and this group has enjoyed much success together. They have offensive momentum, and Bartow Arena is a tough barn for visitors to play in. UAB went 12-5 in Bartow last season, and it’ll use its size and experience to win tonight.
