Toledo vs Akron Predictions, Picks, Odds for College Football Week 14

Toledo is coming off its worst scoring output of the season, scoring in single digits for the only time. Fortunately, the Rockets face one of the worst defenses around in the Akron Zips and should have no problem covering tonight's spread.

It’s the end of the road for the Akron Zips, who wrap up a disappointing season when they host the Toledo Rockets tonight at InfoCision Stadium.

Toledo, who has clinched a bowl berth, will be using its regular season finale as a tune-up and is favored by 8.5 points. My Toledo vs Akron predictions expect chalk to win out.

The Rockets' scoring ability highlights our college football picks for Tuesday, November 26 with kickoff set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Toledo vs Akron prediction and best bet

Who will win Toledo vs Akron?

Toledo is coming off a 24-7 loss to Ohio, the second-stingiest defense in the Mid-American Conference.

It was the Rockets’ lowest-scoring output of the year and the only time they’ve been held to single digits.

If there’s a get-right opponent on the schedule for an offense that usually churns out 27.8 points per game — tied for third-most in the MAC — it’s the Zips.

Yes, they put one on Kent State last time out in a 38-17 drubbing, but that might be the only team worse than the Zips, as they score a conference-low 14.5 points per game, and surrender the most at 44.2.

Because there will be some break in action once the regular season ends and the bowl schedule comes together, the message from the Rockets’ room should be to take care of business before the biggest game of the season.

Making it impressive wouldn’t be the worst thing for Toledo, either.

My best bet
Toledo -8.5 (-105 at FanDuel)

My analysis

Toledo owns the second-best passing offense in the MAC, producing 242.3 yards per game, with a league-best 24 TD tosses.

But the passing game has looked stale the last two weeks. It wasn’t a problem when the Rockets ran for 159 yards and two scores in a 37-10 blowout over Central Michigan and Tucker Gleason threw for just 136 yards.

However, it was quite noticeable last game, when Gleason again threw for 136 yards and the rush attack could only muster 42 yards in a lopsided loss against the Bobcats.

They should be able to move both in the right direction against the Akron Zips, who surrender 33.6 points per game (10th in the MAC).

The Zips allow 227.2 pass yards per game, and the 22 TD passes allowed are the third most in the conference. Akron’s rush defense is also 10th, allowing a hefty 182.7 yards on the ground per game, with 23 rushing scores against on the season.

Before the Kent State win, the Zips had lost six of seven, and only one of those defeats was by single digits — a 27-20 defeat to Bowling Green.

Five of those losses were to MAC opponents and the one thing they have in common? All were above Akron in the standings, as is Toledo.

MACtion has been unpredictable on Tuesdays, but I don’t see much drama here. Look for Toledo to take care of business.

Toledo vs Akron same-game parlay (SGP)

Toledo -8.5

Jerjuan Newton Over 56.5 receiving yards

Jordon Simmons Over 61.5 rushing yards

After facing off against two of the Top 5 passing defenses in the MAC over the last two weeks, receiver Jerjuan Newton should be able to find more space against the Zips.

While he’s gone Under 56.5 yards receiving in each of his last three starts, he breezed by those totals in the previous four, which included three games with 100+ receiving yards.

In Akron’s last five losses, no fewer than nine pass catchers have topped this total against the Zips’ D.

And we’ll wrap with Jordon Simmons, whose 61.5 rush total might be discounted because he just ran for 113 yards in a blowout win over Kent and its awful run defense.

However, Simmons has been good for a while, hitting the Over on this total in five of his last six games, including three teams ranked in the Top 6 in run defense in the MAC.
