The Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns enter the 2024 season as some of the league's most intriguing contenders, and the first week of the preseason will be a good showcase of what both rosters are capable of.

Both coaches have said that starters on both sides of the ball will play on Saturday, making this contest a bit more interesting and competitive than most.

Packers vs Browns prediction

My best bet
Browns -3.5 (-110 at FanDuel)

My analysis

The Green Bay Packers headed into last year's preseason with a lot of question marks, featuring the transition to Jordan Love and the seemingly massive role a lot of very young players would play on both sides of the ball. In fact, the Packers finished the season with the youngest team-wide snap-adjusted age.

Matt LaFleur recently spoke about how his decision last year to play many of those youngsters in the preseason helped them accelerate their understanding and comfort. The Packers head coach has also remained committed to having starters on both sides of the ball play this Saturday to help replicate that accelerated comfort come opening week.

Kevin Stefanski didn't speak as extensively as LaFleur about his preseason game plan, but the Cleveland Browns HC noted that Deshaun Watson won't start. However, despite that discrepancy, the Browns may be the better bet on Saturday based on the reserve quarterbacks each team possesses.

The Packers have second-year Sean Clifford and fresh-faced rookie Michael Pratt (zero combined career pass attempts), while the Browns boast the likes of Jameis Winston, Tyler Huntley, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson — three guys who make up nearly 100 career starts in the regular season.

Winston boasts the vast majority of that play, but Huntley (342 pass attempts in 20 games) and DTR (112 in eight games) have an unignorable amount of experience as well.

And it's not just at quarterback where Cleveland has the depth edge. At receiver, the Packers' depth chart includes names like Malik Heath, Samori Toure, Grant Dubose, and Dimitri Stanley. Meanwhile, the Browns' depth chart features Cedric Tillman, Jamari Thrash, Jaelon Darden, and James Proche.

While most fans may not know either collective of names, the latter features infinitely more productive receivers at the college level.
