The Super Bowl odds are on the move once more as the Over/Under is starting to tick down with books adjusting the total on Thursday.

Sportsbooks have had the SBLIX total parked at 49.5 points for most of the week, but money is starting to show on the Under and the bookmakers have knocked the number down to as low as 48.5 points at some books.

Sportsbooks trimming the total

As of this writing, several operators are still at 49.5 O/U with others down to 49 and one mainstream market at 48.5 points.

This movement is a touch counterintuitive to previous Super Bowl betting patterns, which often see the total climb closer to kickoff. The Over is one of the more popular wagers among casual football bettors, and the Super Bowl is the one game of the year in which recreational action overpowers the sharp opinion.

According to some sportsbooks, the Over had drawn close to 90% of both ticket count and handle in the opening 24 hours, which prompted a move from the opening number of 48.5 points on Sunday night to 49.5 across the industry by Monday morning.

The bulk of the public money, however, shows up within the 48 hours before kickoff. Any adjustments, especially ones made toward the Under, at this point in the two-week ramp-up to the game are rooted in respected action coming from professional bettors.

There’s just cause for interest in the Under. The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles had twin 7-10 Over/Under records on the season and the look-ahead line ahead of the results of Championship Sunday had a matchup between the Chiefs and Eagles tabbed with a 45.5-point total.

After Philadelphia erupted for 55 points in the win over Washington in the NFC title game, that look-ahead O/U jumped to 48.5. Kansas City would edge Buffalo 32-29 in the AFC Championship Game — its highest scoring output of the entire season — and that prompted initial play on the Over 48.5 for the opening number.

Last year’s closing total for Super Bowl LVIII between the Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers was 46.5 points, which was the shortest Big Game Over/Under in the past eight years. The 2023 meeting between KC and Philly closed with a total of 51.5 O/U in Super Bowl LVII, with the 38-35 finish topping that bar.
