The Detroit Red Wings return from their four-game West-Coast road trip tonight and host the cross-conference Colorado Avalanche, who might be the best home team team in hockey but are a sub-500 team on the road and are also coming in from out West.

Revenge-angle bettors should be salivating at J.T. Compher as the former Av is centering the top power play and second line for Detroit and should find the score sheet tonight in a game that has a growing total.

I break down the NHL odds and offer my free NHL picks for Avalanche vs. Red Wings for Thursday, February 22.

Avalanche vs Red Wings odds

Avalanche vs Red Wings predictions

J.T. Compher has collected a point in four straight games and nine of his 11 games while centering the second line and first power-play unit for the Detroit Red Wings. He's paying -110 for a point tonight vs. his former team and in a game with a total that’s hitting 7, hitting his Over tonight is my best bet.

The Colorado Avalanche are the best home team in hockey at 22-5 SU on the season, but on the road, this is a different team.

Colorado is 13-17 SU away from Ball Arena this year and this can be attributed to an offense that lacks depth and is easier to match up against when on the road. This is also a team with a worse expected goals against/60 at 5-on-5 than Columbus over the last 30 days.

Colorado has a 3.55 GAA over the last 30 days which is a Bottom-5 rate. That's thanks to starting goalie Alex Georgiev having a 3.57 GAA on the road since January 1 (nine games) with a sub-890 save percentage. Detroit will have many opportunities to put up goals tonight.

Compher spent his first seven years in the league with the Avs and money will be on the board for the Wings tonight meaning there's some more motivation for him and his team.

Detroit has found some success with its current top-six roles and Compher centering Alex DeBrincat and Lucas Raymond is a great spot as this line gets better defensive matchups with Colorado likely concentrating on the Dylan Larkin line.

The man of the night is playing over 20 minutes a game which is up over his season average and the -110 price for a point is a bargain considering the potential for total goals in this game, the revenge angle, and his current offensive opportunities and form.

My best bet: J.T. Compher Over 0.5 points (-110 at SIA)

Avalanche vs Red Wings same-game parlay

J.T. Compher Over 0.5 points

Lucas Raymond Over 0.5 points

Red Wings moneyline

Compher and Raymond play a lot together and pair on the second line and first power-play unit. If one gets a point, there's a great chance both will.

The Avs' record is built on the back of the best home record in hockey which is masking their poor performance on the road. With a growing total, there should be some scoring and with both clubs returning from out West, the opening frame could be a little unorganized.

The best case here is a Detroit 2-0 lead after the first frame with a Raymond goal set up from Compher.

Avalanche vs Red Wings moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Red Wings opened at +120 on the moneyline, hit as high as +125 around 8 a.m. ET, but then took a lot of money moving this ML to as short as +115. The Over is taking some money, moving this 6.5 to 7 in some spots which is likely where it will close.

It’s always hard to come back from a West Coast trip and that’s what Detroit is dealing with after a 2-2 SU four-game trip that started off 0-2 SU. Detroit last played on Monday so it's had some time to adapt to the three time-zone changes, but the Avs are also coming back from altitude as they were at home on Tuesday.

Both teams are coming from the West but the Red Wings might have the schedule advantage with the extra day of rest. Colorado also had a big game vs. the West-leading Canucks on Tuesday so a letdown spot vs. a non-conference team is a possibility.

Since the beginning of November, Colorado is 5-6 SU on the road following a home game but three of those losses came against the Coyotes (twice) and the Blackhawks. The road has just not been a good place for the Avs who are 13-17 SU with a negative goal differential of -0.37 per game.

The Avs have the benefit of playing at home in altitude which is making their record look better than it is and offering value in fading them on the road.

Detroit has the offense to win a shootout which has me not worrying too much about confirmed starter Alex Lyon. The new No. 1 had been struggling but got the win against Seattle. I’m more impressed with the Detroit special teams of late which might be the difference and a big reason I’m happy to take the home side at +110 or better tonight.

Over the last 30 days, Detroit has the No. 1 penalty kill and the No. 5 power play. The Avs also have zero depth scoring and are an easy team to match up against with the last change.

I’m off the Over at the current price but do like goals here and with the Avs being overvalued for a road team that loses more than it wins, I’m jumping on the Wings with the others who are moving the line.
