Blackhawks vs Avalanche Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Hawks Offense Can't Compete

The Avalanche beat the division-rival Blackhawks 5-0 just last Thursday, and our NHL betting picks don't see any reason to expect a dramatic reversal on the scoreboard when the teams meet again on Monday.

There is a Central Division tilt in the late window of Monday’s NHL slate with the Colorado Avalanche hosting the Chicago Blackhawks. NHL odds have Colorado as a massive -420 favorite while the total sits at 6 or 6.5, depending on the book.

The Under has been an immensely profitable bet when these two teams have squared off over the past couple of seasons, with five or fewer total goals scored in each of the past five meetings.

Will we see another low-scoring affair, or can the goals pick up this time around? Find out in my free NHL picks for Blackhawks vs. Avalanche on Monday, March 4.

Blackhawks vs Avalanche predictions

One of the best Under teams in the league, the Chicago Blackhawks continue to find themselves in low-scoring outings with five or fewer total goals scored in six of their past eight games. This trend exists for two reasons: strong goaltending and terrible offensive play.

Let’s start with the goaltending, as Petr Mrazek is expected to guard the cage for the Hawks. He has been a wall, relatively speaking, this season as he boasts a .908 SV% and a 3.04 GAA through 42 appearances in the crease.

Those numbers are impressive when looking at the play in front of him. The offense hardly ever gives him much goal support as the Blackhawks rank last in the league in goals per game, power play percentage, and shooting percentage.

Based on their underlying metrics, positive regression is unlikely as they also rank 29th in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60) at 5-on-5. Subsequently, Chicago’s offense will struggle mightily once again in this matchup against the Colorado Avalanche, a team that ranks in the top half of the league in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60) at 5-on-5.

We just saw these two teams square off last Thursday, with the Avs claiming a 5-0 victory. We should expect a very similar outing on Monday.

My best bet: Under 6 (+100 at BetMGM)

Blackhawks vs Avalanche same-game parlay

Under 6.5

Avalanche moneyline

Colorado is a massive favorite once again, and if we are expecting a similar outing to Thursday’s game, then this is a way to back them at plus-money. These two teams are just on completely different levels.

Entering this matchup, the Avalanche rank higher than Chicago in virtually every category across the board. Offensively, they rank higher in goals scored per game, shots on goal per game, power play percentage, shooting percentage, and faceoff percentage.

Defensively, they also rank higher in goals allowed per game, shots on goal allowed per game, and penalty kill percentage. The one edge the Hawks possess is in net, but that just bodes well for limiting too much offensive damage from the Avs in what could be another 5-0 outing.

Blackhawks vs Avalanche moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Avalanche opened as a -400 favorite and were quickly bet up to -420. I would be shocked if there is too much more line movement, solely because the market will not like Chicago, but anything north of four dollars is just such a steep price.

That brings us to the total, which opened at 6 or 6.5, depending on the book. I believe there will be a lot of push-and-pull in this market, given Chicago’s propensity for Unders and Colorado’s tendency to go Over.

With that said, Mrazek should be able to hold his own against the Avs, while Chicago’s offense is hardly likely to find any success once again.
