The New Jersey Devils are in a healthy rut, having dropped four in a row and nine of their past 11 overall.
While they have not been as sharp defensively of late, a lack of offense has been their biggest problem.
My Bruins vs. Devils predictions see Jesper Bratt jumpstarting New Jersey’s offense against a team that is really struggling defensively.
Let’s break things down further with my January 22 NHL picks.
Bruins vs Devils prediction
My best bet
Jesper Bratt Over 0.5 assists (+100 at Bet365)
My analysis
Jesper Bratt has been a priority target for me all season long – especially in the assist market – and there is no reason to get away from that.
Bratt has picked up an assist in 61% of his games this year and 68% when playing on home soil. Incredible numbers.
Although some may see Sheldon Keefe taking Bratt off Jack Hughes’ line as a negative, the numbers tell a much different story.
Bratt’s actually been more productive when playing with Nico Hischier at 5v5 – and it’s not all that close.
Bratt has averaged 0.41 goals, 1.63 assists, and 2.04 points per 60 minutes with Jack Hughes since the beginning of the 2023-24 season. This is over 885 minutes of work.
He logged 661 minutes with Hischier during the same span, over which time he was much more efficient. Bratt generated 1.09 goals, 2.18 assists, and 3.27 points per 60 minutes alongside Hischier.
Yes, his goal rate more than doubled and we’re chasing assists. But Bratt also was much more productive when it came to facilitating goals for others.
The Boston Bruins are a defensive disaster right now. They rank dead last in shot suppression and goals against during the month of January. Meanwhile, only the San Jose Sharks – by the slimmest of margins – have conceded expected goals at a higher rate.
They are giving up quality and quantity and the goals are flowing for opponents as a result.
While the Bruins have seemingly hit a new low of late, it’s worth noting they rank dead last in goals against per 60 minutes on the road this season. They can’t keep the puck out of their net outside of Boston.
This is the perfect matchup for a struggling New Jersey Devils team to break out of their funk and get back on track offensively. Look for Bratt to be one of the players leading the charge.
Bruins vs Devils same-game parlay (SGP)
Jesper Bratt doesn’t just benefit from playing with Nico Hischier; it goes both ways. He has seen big spikes in production when skating on a line with Bratt, generating 1.54 goals and 3.36 points per 60 minutes of 5v5 play.
Both of those outputs are drastically higher than what Hischier has produced with any winger on the roster he’s spent meaningful time with.
Hischier has done his best work on home soil, where he’s scored in 40% of his games this season.
With an elite playmaker like Bratt by his side against a Bruins team playing terrible defense, this is a great spot for the captain to find the back of the net.
Boston has won just nine of 24 games on the road this season and have bled goals all season long. This is a nice get right spot for a quality Devils team that has played far below its capabilities of late.
