The Montreal Canadiens appear to be slowly moving in the right direction. They’ve won three of their last five games and picked up at least a point in four of them, only falling flat against a very good Vegas Golden Knights team.
My Canadiens vs. Rangers predictions see Montreal sniper Cole Caufield making his mark in what could be a high-scoring affair.
Let’s take a closer look with my NHL picks for November 30.

My Canadiens pick
Cole Caufield Over 0.5 points (-140 at BET99)
My Canadiens analysis
Cole Caufield has come to life since being promoted back to the top line alongside Nick Suzuki and Alex Newhook.
He's shown great chemistry with Suzuki throughout the years, while Newhook has nicely complimented Caufield on his opposite wing. Montreal’s most dangerous offensive player has points in two of three games since the new-look top unit was assembled.
Caufield’s really been able to put his lethal shot to use, piling up 23 attempts and 11 scoring chances over those three games.
What’s especially encouraging is Caufield has not been a power play merchant inflating his totals on the man advantage. He's doing a lot of damage at 5-on-5 as well.
The Caufield-Suzuki-Newhook line has spent a ton of time on the front foot in the offensive zone, leading to more opportunities to get the winger the puck in dangerous positions.
The Montreal Canadians have out-attempted opponents 41-19 and controlled better than 60% of the scoring chance share with that line on the ice at full strength.
Their success should continue in a fruitful matchup against the New York Rangers, who are having a miserable time in the defensive zone.
The Rangers have allowed shots on target, high-danger scoring chances, and expected goals at a higher rate than all but the Anaheim Ducks this season. They can’t defend a lick, which is why they continue to lose games in bulk.
New York played a divisional game on the road Friday and will be suiting up for the third time in four days, while Montreal has been off and resting since Wednesday.
Look for Caufield to put his fresh legs to use and hit the scoresheet this afternoon.
Canadiens vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)
Caufield and Suzuki are heavily intertwined when it comes to production. Last season they were attached at the hip, and Caufield recorded a point in 65% of his games while Suzuki finished with a point in 63%. That is not a coincidence.
Given their chemistry and the amount of ice time they share, it’s not often one gets a point without the other. If Caufield is hitting the scoresheet, there’s a good chance Suzuki is as well.
While Jonathan Quick has posted spectacular numbers this season, there is some level of smoke and mirrors. Four of his five starts came against teams that rank Bottom 12 in goals per game this season.
The only game Quick started against a Top-20 offense was the 18th-ranked Edmonton Oilers. Quick conceded six goals that game.
The Canadiens are not a Top-20 offense, but they're trending in the right direction, sitting 11th in goals over the past five games. They should cause New York some problems.
