The Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers are set for their third meeting of the season. So far, it’s been all Rangers in the season series, as they’ve outscored Montreal 11-5 in those first two games, but both teams will be playing the second leg of a back-to-back, so we will see which team is more fatigued.

The Canadiens have been playing a much better brand of hockey over their past seven games and my Canadiens vs. Rangers predictions have the hosts bouncing back after last night's loss.

Find out why in my NHL picks for Sunday, January 19.

My Canadiens analysis

The Montreal Canadiens have yet to beat the New York Rangers this season, but they’re 5-2-1 to kick off 2025. Lane Hutson, Nick Suzuki, and Cole Caufield have been quite the fun trio to watch as of late. Hutson’s name is starting to catch some serious consideration for the NHL’s rookie of the year. In his last eight games, Hutson has put up one goal with 10 assists and seven of those points have been at even strength. Suzuki and Caufield have been producing pretty consistently all season long, but have been absolute money during this latest stretch. Suzuki has two goals and eight assists, along with being a +6 in the last eight games, while Caufield has five goals with four helpers, along with being a +3 in that same span.

Jakub Dobes has been quite the surprise for Montreal in goal. He should be starting tonight since Sam Montembeault got the nod last night. Dobes is 4-0-0 with a .963 SV% and a 0.98 GAA to kick off his NHL career. Montreal hasn’t necessarily been dominant in any specific parts of their game. They’re not firing on all cylinders offensively and aren’t shutting down opponents, but they are getting the job done.

But one area where the Canadiens and Rangers both struggle is limiting high-danger chances at 5-on-5. The Canadiens are surrendering the second most high-danger chances against per 60 in the league, (12.25), and the Rangers are right behind them in third (12.20).

The Rangers have been playing much better hockey since the New Year, but Montreal won’t be a walk in the park tonight.

Canadiens vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 6

Jonathan Quick and Jakub Dobes should actually make for a solid goaltending battle tonight. Dobes has been on fire, and the Rangers haven’t been lighting it up offensively as of late. They’re averaging 3.14 goals per game in their last nine, but the Canadiens are averaging just 2.88 goals per game in their last nine as well. The first two games between these teams were high-scoring, but I’m not expecting one tonight.
