The Vancouver Canucks face a big test tonight as they look to put an end to their three-game losing streak.
My Canucks vs. Hurricanes predictions see them doing just that and building on their road success to date, with a grind-it-out win in Carolina.
Let’s break things down further with my NHL picks for Friday, January 10.

My Canucks analysis
Although the Vancouver Canucks have won just two of their past 10 games, they aren’t playing nearly as bad as the results would indicate.
Five of the seven losses accumulated came in extra time, meaning they were by the slimmest of margins at a point where games essentially turn to coin flips. With a little more luck, the picture could look a whole lot different.
Even so, the Canucks have managed to outshoot and outscore opponents at 5v5 during this 2-8 run. That’s impressive considering superstar Quinn Hughes missed four games, while the team continues to deal with injuries to both Elias Pettersson and Filip Hronek.
Meanwhile, the Carolina Hurricanes played a very good Toronto team on Thursday night. There wasn’t much separation between the two teams until the final frame, so Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, and the team’s top defensemen all carried full workloads.
Perhaps more importantly, netminder Pyotr Kochetkov started and faced 33 shots. That means the team will have to turn to backup Dustin Tokarski in the second leg of the back-to-back.
Tokarski has not performed well since his first start, conceding nine goals over the last 66 shots faced (.863 SV%). If the Canucks can test Tokarski with any regularity, they should be able to score. The Hurricanes also rank 19th in expected goals against at 5v5 the past 10 games and have played at the league’s second-fastest pace.
There should be opportunities for the Canucks offensively, especially with the Hurricanes in a back-to-back. Look for the Canucks — who own an impressive 11-4-4 record on the road — to get back on track tonight.
Canucks vs Hurricanes odds analysis
The market has moved towards Carolina since opening, with their moneyline odds shifting from -142 to -159. That gives the Hurricanes an implied winning percentage of 61.4%, which is a little strong for a team in a back-to-back situation starting a journeyman goaltender.
Not to mention, Rick Tocchet’s Canucks play a grind-it-out style similar to the Hurricanes that is very taxing to play against — particularly when fatigue could already be a factor. Vancouver has also won three of the past four games against Carolina, losing the exception in extra time.
We’ve seen some movement on the total as well, with the Over of 6.0 goals now trading at -114. This is likely a byproduct of Tokarski getting the nod for the Hurricanes. Three of the past four meetings between these teams have featured at least six goals.
