The Vancouver Canucks start their week by hosting the Carolina Hurricanes in a battle between two of the hottest teams in the NHL.
My Hurricanes vs. Canucks predictions see the home side building on its recent success and picking up another win against one of the league’s best teams. Let’s break it down further with my October 28 NHL picks.

My Canuck analysis
The Vancouver Canucks are playing terrific hockey, particularly at 5-on-5. The Canucks have controlled 58% of the high-danger chances and out-scored their competition 13-6 during this four-game winning streak.
Elias Pettersson is heating up alongside Conor Garland, while the new top line of Jake DeBrusk, JT Miller, and Brock Boeser has looked unstoppable, generating 21 chances and three goals in just 30 minutes of ice time.
Rick Tocchet has found a way to maximize the team offensively without taking away from their ability to keep things tidy at the other end.
With the way Vancouver is controlling play and piling up chances, it’ll likely take a great goaltending performance to slow them down. I don’t know if that’s in the cards for the Carolina Hurricanes tonight.
They have rotated their starting goaltender each time out. Assuming that trend continues, Frederik Andersen will get the night off in favor of Pyotr Kochetkov. That's good news for the Canucks.
Andersen owns a .941 SV% and has saved 7.1 goals above expectation through four starts. Only Lukas Dostal has fared better than Andersen by GSAx.
Kochetkov hasn’t performed nearly as well. He’s managed a .896 SV% and has saved about exactly what’s expected. He hasn’t been bad — but he hasn’t shaved off goals the way Andersen has.
That may be necessary for the Hurricanes in this game. Although they’re a strong defensive team, this is their sixth road game in 10 days.
It’s been a long, grueling road trip, and this is the last stop along the way. There may not be enough gas left in the tank to adequately defend a talented Canucks squad playing its best hockey.
Factor in the scheduling advantage — the Canucks have had four of the past five nights off and haven’t traveled since last Tuesday — and the Hurricanes could be in tough tonight.
