Devils vs Flyers Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Our NHL betting picks expect goals to be rare when the defensively-sound Devils visit the equally stingy Flyers tonight. Look for Travis Sanheim and Cam York to stop shots from getting on net once more as the game goes below the total.

The Philadelphia Flyers return home to host the New Jersey Devils in the first of two meetings between the rivals this week.

We just saw this matchup last week in Newark with the Flyers coming away with a 3-1 victory, including an empty-net goal in the final seconds. There were just 31 total shots on goal in that one, so we could be in for another tight-checking, low-event game on Monday night in Philadelphia, as I explain in my Devils vs. Flyers predictions and NHL picks for January 27.

My analysis
These are two of the stingiest teams defensively this season, and we saw that just last week with the 3-1 final. The New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers rank fifth and sixth, respectively, in xGA/60 at 5-on-5 at 2.24 and 2.27.

That number has been even better for the Flyers as of late. They have the fifth-best xGA/60 in the league in the last 10 games at 2.16 and the best in the league in the last 25 contests at 1.96.

Goaltending has been Philadelphia’s downfall this season but Sam Ersson is healthy and looking strong as of late. His last start against the Rangers is a bit of an outlier as New York was able to capitalize on its chances, but that was his first time allowing more than three goals since the holiday break — and just his fourth time allowing more than one in those nine starts. Ersson is 7-2-0 with a .923 SV% and 17 goals allowed in those nine starts.

The injury to Jacob Markstrom hurts for the Devils, but Jake Allen has been solid this season. He allowed just two goals to the Flyers last week and is 2-2-0 with seven goals against in four starts this calendar year.

It should be an old-fashioned, low-scoring game between these division rivals on Monday night.

Devils vs Flyers same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 5.5

Cam York 2+ blocked shots

Travis Sanheim 2+ blocked shots

One of the main reasons that last Saturday’s matchup had so few shots on goal is that there were so many blocked shots. The Flyers blocked 33 shots as a team with both Cam York and Travis Sanheim getting in front of multiple pucks.

Sanheim has had at least two blocks in 76% of his games this season and 83% at home. York also has a high hit rate at 64% both overall and at home. These top blueliners are playing John Tortorella hockey and we can cash in with them tonight.
