The Calgary Flames are battling for a wild-card spot in the Western Conference and boast a solid 15-6-3 record at the Scotiabank Saddledome. They welcome the toast of the Eastern Conference to town tonight, and the Washington Capitals will be looking to rebound from a road loss last time out.
My top NHL picks and Capitals vs. Flames predictions are calling for top-tier goaltending to pave the way to a low-scoring result in Cowtown tonight.
Flames vs Capitals prediction
My Flames pick
Under 5.5 (-110 at BET99)
My analysis
The No. 1 reason I’m eyeing this Under is because of Calgary Flames No. 1 Dustin Wolf and how well he’s played at the Scotiabank Saddledome this season.
Wolf sports an elite .936 save percentage and 1.98 GAA with 8.61 goals saved above average across 15 home games. The Flames have also been far stingier on home ice with 2.63 goals against per game and a 75.8 penalty-kill percentage compared to respective 3.29 and 67.1% marks on the highway.
Of course, the Washington Capitals have also played to the Under in nine consecutive games, and they allow the fewest goals per game (2.37) and fourth-fewest per 60 minutes (2.03) at five-on-five.
Goaltending has been key for the Caps, too.
Freshly signed Logan Thompson is climbing Vezina Trophy odds lists with his .925 SV%, 2.09 GAA and 17.96 goals saved above average across 27 appearances hanging with the league leaders.
Finally, Washington also has the highest team shooting percentage at 5-on-5, and there’s serious negative regression ahead. It might not kick in entirely Tuesday, but the Caps aren’t going to maintain their 10.9% mark.
Flames vs Capitals same-game parlay (SGP)
Calgary has gone 15-6-3 on home ice this season, and Washington is coming off a 2-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. I’m obviously expecting a low-scoring affair, and as noted, I do expect the puck luck to begin to turn against the Caps.
In addition to the highlighted league-high team shooting percentage at 5-on-5, Washington also ranks sixth in 5-on-5 team save percentage (.922) to pace the NHL with a 103.1 PDO.
Turning to Calgary center Nazem Kadri, he often trades at a 3.5 shots total, so this is already a target-worthy prop. He’s also recorded just five shots across his past four games despite 16 attempts (31.3%). I’m expecting him to have better shooting efficiency Tuesday.
After all, prior to this recent funk, Kadri recorded three or more shots in eight of 10 games with 63.6% of his attempts registering as shots. There’s room for Kadri to land in the middle of those percentages and register three or more shots tonight.
