Flames vs Devils Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

The Calgary Flames continue to juggle their lines, but Connor Zary remains a constant as a shot-producing forward. Look for him to test the Devils defense at least a couple of times on Friday night.

The Calgary Flames will look to snap a four-game losing streak with a win over the New Jersey Devils at Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday, November 1.

New Jersey is heating up with consecutive wins following its own four-game slide, and my top Devils vs. Flames predictions and NHL picks are calling for Calgary winger Connor Zary to zap a couple of shots tonight.

My Devils analysis

Calgary Flames winger Connor Zary is quickly establishing himself as a key contributor and building block for the future. The 2020 first-round selection has been bouncing around the lineup with Flames head coach Ryan Huska keeping his line combos in the blender to start the season, but it hasn’t impacted Zary’s shot volume.

Zary’s posted a respectable 8.01 shots and 15.68 attempts per 60 minutes to record two or more shots in eight of 10 games this season. Additionally, while Calgary sports a 26th-ranked 47.0 Corsi For percentage at 5-on-5, Zary ranks fourth with an even 50.0 CF% at 5-on-5 while logging the fourth most ice time per game (17:59) among Flames forwards.

It serves as a clear illustration of his acclimatization to the highest level, and Zary has shown similar growth in his shot volume in his past stops in the AHL and WHL. He averaged 1.6 shots per game in his first full season in the AHL and proceeded to jump to 2.5 in his second. Similarly, he averaged 2.4 per game in his first run through the WHL and then climbed to 3.6 per in his second.

The New Jersey Devils were one of the best possession teams in the NHL, and they’re trending back in that direction with a 59.0 CF% and 19.32 shots allowed per 60 across their past two games. It sets the Devils up for a bit of a slide because those marks are all but guaranteed to regress closer to their season-long 51.1% and 27.08 marks.

I’ve been targeting Zary in the shots market because he’s a tweener right now and probably should be trading at a 2.5 shots total at plus-money odds. In addition to the noted per 60 metrics, he’s also averaging a healthy 2.4 shots and 4.7 attempts per game.

Paying the heavy vig isn’t for everyone, but there’s still value in this decreased total based on my projection of him finishing with 2.4 shots tonight. Additionally, I’ll continue to back Zary as long as he continues to receive top minutes and maintain the surge in shots and attempts.

Flames vs Devils same-game parlay (SGP)

Connor Zary Over 1.5 shots

Erik Haula Over 1.5 shots

Nico Hischier Over 2.5 shots

The Flames have surrendered the fourth-most shots per game to opposing centers, and Devils middle-men Nico Hischier and Erik Haula are both putting a lot of pucks on net of late. Of course, as noted, Calgary has also struggled with 5-on-5 possession and has allowed the fourth-most shots per game (32.7).

Hischier has three or more shots in eight of 13 games this season, including in five of his past seven. He’s also sporting an impressive 10.04 shots and 17.58 attempts per 60 while logging a hefty 20:13 of ice time per night.

Huala has been similarly impressive considering he’s trading at a decreased total. He’s registered two or more shots in eight of 13 games this season, including six of the past seven, while posting 7.98 shots and 11.18 attempts per 60 across 14:27 of ice time per night.
