The Calgary Flames look to rebound from their first loss of the season with a return to the wins column against the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday, October 22.

Goals have been hard to come by against Calgary, and my Flames vs. Penguins predictions and NHL picks expect this to be a low-scoring affair.

Flames vs Penguins prediction

My Flames pick
Under 6.5 goals (-105 at BET99)

My Flames analysis
The Calgary Flames allow just 2.38 goals per game and 2.5 expected goals per 60, and they’ve played to the Under in three straight. Calgary isn’t loaded with gifted scorers, so the path to wins is through sound team defense.

While Calgary has benefited from elite goaltending and sports a league-high .956 team SV% at 5-on-5, there's room for a modest decline before it’s a concern for this Under.

As for the Pittsburgh Penguins, I anticipate head coach Mike Sullivan having his team paying much closer attention to defensive detail tonight.

Pittsburgh sporting a ninth-ranked 52.4 Corsi For percentage at 5-on-5 is great, but the Pens allow too many high-quality chances.

With the added focus on team defense from Pittsburgh, I expect it to limit high-danger chances and, in return, sacrifice offense to keep this game tight.

Flames vs Penguins same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 6.5 goals

Blake Coleman Over 2.5 shots

Kris Letang Over 1.5 shots

Pittsburgh allows shots in bunches. While I expect defensive improvement from the Pens, Flames winger Blake Coleman has morphed into a high-volume shooter.

He’s recorded three or more shots in four straight, with 17 total on 25 attempts. The Pens also allow the second-most shot attempts per game to wingers.

Turning to Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang, he’s also had an uptick in shots and attempts with two or more in three of the past four games.

He’s skating with the No. 1 power-play unit, and Calgary has surrendered the 10th-most attempts to opposing defensemen, so the matchup is favorable.
