The Edmonton Oilers are looking to win their fifth consecutive game when they visit PPG Paints Arena on Thursday, January 9, to face the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Edmonton has been piling up wins while superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have been piling up points, and my top Oilers vs. Penguins predictions and NHL picks don’t expect Pittsburgh to have an answer tonight.

My Oilers pick
Oilers in regulation (-130 at BET99)
My Oilers analysis
The Edmonton Oilers have won 14 of their past 26 games in regulation, including four straight while outscoring their opponents 16-5, and Edmonton is 19-5-2 during the stretch.
Superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl respectively pace the NHL in points and goals during the heater, and the Oilers have been a special-teams machine.
Edmonton sports a fifth-ranked 28.8 power-play percentage and top-ranked 89.3 penalty-kill percentage during the stretch, and the Oil are at full health for tonight's tilt against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Pittsburgh will likely be without go-to center Evgeni Malkin (upper body) after he didn’t participate in line rushes during Wednesday’s practice, so that will make the Oilers all the more difficult to match up against for the Pens.
There’s also a clear 5-on-5 advantage for Edmonton.
Oilers | Penguins | |
---|---|---|
Corsi for percentage | 53.8% (third) | 49.5% (15th) |
Goals for percentage | 53.5% (ninth) | 43.5% (29th) |
Expected goals for percentage | 54.3% (fourth) | 49.8% (21st) |
I also value Edmonton starter Stuart Skinner upping his game with a .963 SV% and 1.03 GAA across his past three games, and he’s also allowed two goals or fewer in 11 of his past 15 with respective .920 and 2.22 marks.
Put another tick in the wins column for the Oil tonight.
Oilers vs Penguins same-game parlay (SGP)
The Oilers have gone Under the number in four straight and seven of their past nine, and it aligns with the highlighted elite PK play and improved goaltending.
Additionally, opposing teams have to game plan to slow down both McDavid and Draisaitl, and it’s resulted in opponents generating just 25.76 shots and 2.25 expected goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 during the noted 26-game heater.
Look for Pittsburgh to simplify its game and focus on playing sound defensively, which in turn will limit the prime scoring chances for the Penguins.
For the final leg of this same-game parlay, I’m turning to Drasaitl in the shots market because he’s recorded three or more in 10 of his past 13 games and 25 of 40 for the campaign.
There’s potential for his total to climb to 3.5, but as long as it’s at 2.5, adding the Over to SGPs is a nice multiplier alongside an Under for the game total.
