The Calgary Flames are heading into Madison Square Garden tonight for the second leg of a back-to-back after falling to the Toronto Maple Leafs by the score of 6-2 last night. The Flames were flirting with the playoffs, but after losing three in a row and four of their last five, those hopes are dwindling.

Calgary has been struggling to score for the majority of the season, and that might be the case again tonight vs. an equally goal-starved Rangers squad on Tuesday, March 18.

Read on for my best Flames vs. Rangers predictions and free NHL picks.

Flames vs Rangers prediction

My Flames pick: Under 5.5 (-108 at BET99)

My Flames analysis
The Calgary Flames have not been playing their best hockey since their return from the 4 Nations break. They have been the second-worst offensive team in the NHL, only scoring 2.09 goals per game with a power play that’s converting at a 16.1%.

It appears that only three guys have been producing consistently over their past 11 games, and those guys are Jonathan Huberdeau (nine points), Nazem Kadri (eight points), and MacKenzie Weegar (eight points). After those three, there is a steep drop off in offensive production.

Rookie sensation Dustin Wolf has done everything possible to keep this team competitive. However, Wolf started last night and allowed five goals on 26 shots for a .808 SV%. Dan Vladar came in for relief last night and he will most likely get the nod in goal tonight.

Vladar’s numbers aren’t the greatest, but he’s been good enough to keep the Flames competitive with a .893 SV%  and a 2.98 GAA. As a team, the Flames are only giving up 2.73 goals against and their penalty kill is at an 82.4% success rate, so they might be able to keep the New York Rangers off the board.

The Rangers' power play has been struggling mightily, as they’ve scored on just one of their last 22 attempts and are at an 11.1% success rate over their last 13 games. Igor Shesterkin will be back in goal tonight, which will make life difficult on Calgary’s forwards.

This should be a low-scoring affair.

Flames vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 5.5

Matt Coronato 3+ shots on goal

Flames +1.5

Matt Coronato is coming back home to play at MSG in front of his friends and family, so he will be extra fired up tonight. Coronato only had two shots on goal last night, but had three in the game prior and is not shy to shoot the puck. The Rangers allow plenty of shots against, so he should get some looks.

The Rangers have been struggling a bit offensively, especially on the power play. If the Flames can stay detailed in their defensive zone, this game should be tied or remain close the entire way. Calgary desperately needs the two points as much as the Rangers do, so this game should have a playoff type of feel to it.
