The New Jersey Devils suffered a setback against the Philadelphia Flyers last time out, falling by a 4-2 scoreline in the City of Brotherly Love.
My Flyers vs. Devils predictions see Jack Hughes playing a pivotal role in a bounce-back effort for the home side.
Let’s break things down further with my Wednesday, January 29 NHL picks with the puck set to drop at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Flyers vs Devils prediction
My best bet
Jack Hughes Over 3.5 shots on goal (-120 at FanDuel)
My analysis
Jack Hughes has been firing at will for quite some time. After an initial dip in shot rates under Sheldon Keefe, Hughes has seen his outputs reach new heights over the past six weeks.
Hughes has averaged a remarkable 8.7 shot attempts per game over his last 20. That is well above the 7.3 attempts he averaged last game while clearing his line at nearly a 60% clip.
I don’t expect Hughes’ shot outputs to drop anytime soon. The New Jersey Devils are struggling to score consistently and they need their superstar center to help them get out of this offensive funk.
Captain Nico Hischier's likely absence only puts more offensive responsibility on Hughes’ plate. He generated six shots on 12 attempts against these same Philadelphia Flyers in the first game without Hischier. That was on the road where the low-event Flyers could control matchups.
That is to be expected. Dating back to last season, Hughes’ shot volume is extraordinarily high without Hischier in the lineup.
Hughes has attempted at least 11 shots in four consecutive games sans Hischier, putting up 23 shots on 50 attempts over those outings, good for an average of 5.75 shots and 12.5 attempts.
It's important to note that Hughes logged at least 22 minutes in each of those four games. He has reached that mark 18 times this season and averaged 5.6 shots on 10.4 attempts while posting an 84% hit rate.
Hughes consistently puts up crazy volume when seeing such a large workload, which is easier to project without Hischier.
Flyers vs Devils same-game parlay (SGP)
Hughes has a nice matchup against a Flyers team that is one of the league’s worst when it comes to keeping the puck out of their net.
With Hughes likely to carry an immense workload, and pile up the shots along the way, I like his chances of breaking through. The Flyers have the worst team save percentage in the NHL, after all.
Jesper Bratt is attached to Hughes' hip at 5-on-5 and on a lethal top power-play unit. The two are heavily correlated. If Hughes finds the back of the net, there’s a good chance Bratt made a pass to help create the goal.
Hughes has goals in 43% of New Jersey’s wins while Bratt has assisted in nearly 80% of the team’s victories.
Their success in winning efforts is certainly noteworthy as the Devils are flirting with being -200 favorites.
