The Philadelphia Flyers have been the talk of the league ever since they traded Cutter Gauthier to the Anaheim Ducks. It’s been a wild week, and the Flyers now hit the road for a matchup against the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center on Friday night.

The Orange and Black have hit some ruts recently and are slight NHL odds underdogs tonight, but bounced back nicely with a 3-2 shootout win over Montreal on Wednesday.

On the other side, the Wild have been struggling mightily as of late. After beating the Red Wings coming out of the holiday break, Minnesota has lost six of seven games, with that one win coming in overtime against the lowly Blue Jackets.

Can Philly start its road trip with a win? Read on for our Flyers vs. Wild NHL picks and predictions on Friday, January 12.

Flyers vs Wild predictions

The Minnesota Wild have been outscored 24-12 during their current 1-6-0 stretch, yet are still somehow favorites tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Wild are struggling offensively with star forward Kirill Kaprizov on the shelf due to a lower-body injury. That’s not all, though, as defensemen Jared Spurgeon and Jonas Brodin are out along with starting goalie Filip Gustavsson.

On the other hand, the Flyers are coming into this game rather healthy. Noah Cates has been out for over a month now, so they’ve acclimated to playing without him for a while.

Newly-acquired Flyers defenseman Jamie Drysdale looked the part in his Philadelphia debut on Wednesday night and the home crowd appreciated his play. So did head coach John Tortorella.

“He was up the ice. He’s like a rover. Just because he’s on top of the ice the way he skates. So, there were a couple times when he was up the ice, and we didn’t get him the puck,” Tortorella said after Drysdale’s debut. “He was aggressive and we’re just going to stay on top of him, to push it and take a chance. I think he’s more than willing to do that.”

Drysdale played 19:46 in the shootout win with two shots on goal and a power-play assist. He also set up Morgan Frost for a nice scoring chance in overtime.

The Flyers may finally be out of their holiday rut. They’ve won two of their last three games and picked up a point in a game they should’ve won prior to that.

Meanwhile, Minnesota has been getting thoroughly outscored and outplayed over the last few weeks. The injury bug bit the Wild hard, and they’re feeling the effects of that.

The Flyers also have no trouble going on the road and getting a win. They’re 11-6-4 on the road — better than their 10-8-2 record — and the Wild are just 10-8-2 at home, including losses in each of their last four home games.

It is the first half of a back-to-back set for the Flyers, but there shouldn’t be any worries about which goaltender starts. Both Carter Hart (10-8-3, 2.69 GAA, .911 SV%) and Samuel Ersson (10-5-3, 2.46 GAA, .903 SV%) have been solid in net.

Back the Orange and Black to get the job done as underdogs in Minnesota tonight.

Flyers vs Wild same-game parlay

Flyers moneyline

Under 5.5

The Flyers are our best bet to anchor our parlay, and we’re going to go with the Under 5.5 for a nice +304 payout in the same-game parlay. Alternatively, you could take the Under 6.5 or Under 7.5 if you want some wiggle room, but the Under 5.5 has some value.

The Under is 25-14-2 in Philadelphia’s 41 games thus far and the Under is hitting in Wild games at about a 50% clip (18-19-3). However, Minnesota has had a lot of trouble scoring recently, which will play into the Flyers’ hands.

There have been exactly five goals in each of the last four Flyers games, including two games that went 2-2 to overtime.

The Wild have also been going Under 5.5 at a decent clip with four of their last six games hitting that mark. One of those games that went Over was a Stars 7-2 win on Wednesday night in which Dallas led 3-0 entering the third period before a scoring barrage in the final frame.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Flyers’ last five wins all had five goals or fewer. Look for another 3-2 type of win for Philadelphia tonight.
