Hurricanes vs Islanders Game 6 Odds, Picks, and Predictions: Hurricanes Rain on Long Island

The Hurricanes missed their chance to end this series early, but won't make the same mistake twice in a road arena they're comfortable in — our NHL picks are fading the Islanders.

The Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Islanders clash again for Game 6 on Friday night.

The Hurricanes were unable to close out the Islanders in Game 5 on home ice, suffering a 3-2 loss, as neither team was able to break through on the power play.

The Hurricanes still lead the best-of-seven series by a 3-2 margin, and Carolina would have home-ice advantage in a decisive Game 7, if it comes to that.

Can the Hurricanes win a second consecutive game on the road, or will the Islanders win a second straight elimination game, forcing a Game 7? We’ll discuss in our NHL betting picks for Hurricanes vs. Islanders on April 28.

Hurricanes vs Islanders Game 6 predictions

Last postseason, the Hurricanes couldn’t be beaten at home, winning seven of their eight games at PNC Arena. Carolina couldn’t win on the road, either, going 0-6 away from home.

The Hurricanes have definitely flipped the script, as Carolina posted a dominant 5-2 victory at UBS Arena in Game 4, snapping an NHL-worst losing streak in the playoffs on the road.

The Islanders exacted a little revenge with a rare win in Raleigh on Tuesday, as Pierre Engvall opened the scoring in the first period. The Canes appeared to tie it in the first, but after video review, offside ended up wiping out a goal.

In the second period, Brock Nelson and Mathew Barzal scored goals, with Paul Stastny getting the home side on the board, and the Isles had a 3-1 lead into the third. Sebastian Aho — the Carolina Aho — netted a goal midway through the third, but that’s as close as the Hurricanes could come.

The Islanders are back on home ice, and UBS Arena will certainly be rocking for an unexpected Game 6. Carolina has dominated the recent head-to-head matchups, winning 24 of the past 32 skates on Long Island, and 16 of the past 21 meetings overall.

I'm expecting a bit of a high-scoring affair, with the Hurricanes closing out the series on the road as short ‘dogs. Not only should you play Carolina on the money line, but look to the Over as well.

Hurricanes vs Islanders Game 6 moneyline analysis

While Carolina holds a 3-2 series advantage heading into Game 6, we’ve had three one-goal games in this series, while both teams have netted 14 goals apiece through the first five games.

Antti Raanta and Ilya Sorokin have gone the distance for their respective teams, and both have done well. Raanta is 3-2-0 with a 2.59 GAA and .906 SV% in the series, while Sorokin is 2-3-0 with a 2.77 GAA and .923 SV%.

Engvall was able to beat Raanta in Game 5 for a first-period goal, ending a streak of nine straight postseason games without a score in the first 20 minutes. Other than that, Raanta has started out this series very well in the opening frame.

The Islanders haven’t been able to stack wins lately, going just 1-4 in the past five following a victory. And rest has done Carolina well, with the Hurricanes 4-1 in the past five on two days of rest, while the Islanders are 5-11 in the previous 16 in the same split. The Isles are also 0-4 in the past four after allowing two or fewer goals in the previous game.

While Carolina certainly would have preferred to close things out in Game 5, especially since the forwards are rather depleted due to a series of injuries, the Hurricanes will get a win in Game 6 to grab some much-needed downtime before resuming play in the second round.

Hurricanes vs Islanders Game 6 Over/Under analysis

I am expecting this game to be a little more high-scoring, which is odd for a game getting deeper into a series.

Normally, the later a series goes, the more things tighten up. However, the total of 5.5 goals is rather juicy considering we’ve seen the Over cash in four of the previous five meetings on Long Island.

While Raanta and Sorokin have been decent, they haven’t been great. We’ve seen at least five goals in each of the past four games in this series. New York home games have had an average of 6.5 goals per game in the two skates there.

Neither team was able to break through on the power play in Game 5, the first time both sides had a donut in the power-play column for the entire series. I expect to see at least one or two goals on the man advantage in Game 6.

It’s not going to be fire-wagon hockey, but we will see a quick pace. New York is desperate to extend the series, and playing with house money. Carolina is desperate to end the series, and avoid a Game 7, where anything can happen. We should have an entertaining, and chippy, Game 6.
