The New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes are gearing up for a big Metropolitan Division showdown tonight at Madison Square Garden.

New York has looked like a much better team lately, and my Hurricanes vs. Rangers predictions see value in the home underdog.

Find out why in my NHL picks for January 28.

My analysis
After a rough two-month stretch, the New York Rangers have really turned things around and have put themselves in a good position to contend for a spot in the playoffs. Since January 2, the Rangers have skated to an 8-2-3 record and are tied for second in the league in points.

They’re coming off of a really tough loss at home in a game where they erased separate two-goal leads against the Colorado Avalanche before surrendering the game-winning goal in the dying seconds. There were plenty of positives to take from that game, but ultimately, this team is looking for points.

Igor Shesterkin will be in goal for the Rangers tonight. He is 6-1-1 in his last eight starts and has boasted a .930 SV% and a 1.83 GAA in that span. While Shesterkin has been holding down the fort in goal, New York has also consistently found the back of the net. Over the last 13 games, the Rangers have averaged 3.62 goals per contest, and their power play is clicking at 28.6%.

The Carolina Hurricanes have made plenty of headlines lately with their acquisition of Mikko Rantanen, the star forward in the NHL, but just like most trades, there will be an adjustment period for him. They also added former #1 overall pick Taylor Hall, who will slot in on the second line.

While the Canes have been one of the best teams in the East, their record on the road says otherwise. Outside of their home barn, the Canes are 11-11-3.

Getting the Rangers as a home underdog has solid value.

Hurricanes vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)

Rangers moneyline

Over 5.5

Adam Fox 1+ points

The Rangers and Hurricanes have both been averaging more than three goals per game in their latest stretch.

Despite Igor Shesterkin's strong goalkeeping and Pyotr Kochetkov’s recent play, both teams have plenty of offensive talent. The Over has hit in four of the Rangers' last six games.

Adam Fox has had steady offensive production over the past month, as he has registered two goals and 10 helpers in his last 13 games. Fox has held off the scoresheet in New York's most recent contest, so tonight is a bounce-back play for him.
