Fans at the Canada Life Centre are in for a treat, with the Winnipeg Jets welcoming the Washington Capitals in a bout between the two best teams in the NHL on Tuesday, March 25.

Not only are Washington and Winnipeg neck-and-neck in the Presidents’ Trophy race, but they’re also two of the highest-scoring teams in the league, and my top Capitals vs. Jets predictions and NHL picks expect this bout to go Over the number tonight.

Jets vs Capitals prediction

My Jets pick: Over 5.5 (-112 at Pinnacle)

My Jets analysis
Not only are the Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets the two best teams in the league, but they’re also two of the highest scoring and rank first and third in goals per game.

Both clubs will push the pace offensively in this tape-measuring match, especially with Winnipeg capable of clinching a postseason berth with a win.

Additionally, both clubs are likely to be missing a key top-four defenseman. Winnipeg veteran Neal Pionk is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury, while Washington blueliner Jakob Chychrun is likely going to miss Tuesday’s tilt after his wrist/hand was cut by a skate during Saturday’s game against the Florida Panthers.

Winnipeg will also miss go-to winger Gabriel Vilardi (upper body) for the foreseeable future.

Still, both teams have ample scoring depth. Winnipeg paces the NHL in power-play percentage, while Washington tops the league in goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5. The Capitals also pace the league in goals percentage at 5-on-5, with the Jets ranking second.

Obviously, strong defense and excellent goaltending have been part and parcel of both clubs' success, but that’s built into this 5.5 total. They combined for nine goals in their prior meeting, too.

Jets vs Capitals odds analysis

Winnipeg opened as a -142 home favorite at Pinnacle, and there hasn’t been early movement. It’s not surprising because the Jets are 25-6-4 at home, but missing Pionk and Vilardi is notable. Washington has won nine of its past 10, too.

There hasn’t been a significant move to this 5.5 total since opening at Pinnacle, with the shop moving from a -110/-104 split to -112/-100 by Tuesday morning. Winnipeg topped Washington 5-4 in overtime in their previous meeting this season, for what it's worth.
