The Edmonton Oilers will look to extend their winning streak to three games tonight in Southern California against the San Jose Sharks.
My Oilers vs. Sharks predictions see Leon Draisaitl leading by example and piling up the points against a vulnerable defense.
Let’s take a closer look at my NHL picks for April 3.
Oilers vs Sharks prediction
My Oilers pick: Leon Draisaitl Over 1.5 points (-105 at BET99)
My Oilers analysis
Leon Draisaitl is from another planet. While many players would be thrilled to hit the scoresheet in more than half their games, Draisaitl has cleared a much higher bar.
The German phenom has picked up multiple points in more than half of his games this season. Yes, you’re reading that correctly.
Draisaitl has appeared in 70 games to date, tallying two points (or more) in 36 of them. As you’d expect, there is a strong correlation between Draisaitl’s outputs and the result of the contest.
He has cleared 1.5 points in 36% of the Edmonton Oilers' losses compared to 62% of their wins. That hit rate implies that something in the ballpark of -160 would be a fair price for Draisaitl in a winning effort.
While there are certainly no guarantees in sports, the Oilers are heavily favored against a San Jose Sharks team that has won just 20 of 74 games. A win is likely in the cards.
This is a matchup where the Oilers could and should do serious damage on the scoreboard. The Sharks rank 31st in shot suppression and dead last in goals conceded. They bleed shots and chances on a nightly basis and simply don’t have the goaltending to mask their mistakes.
Every point counts for the Oilers — they’re fighting for home ice in the opening round — and they will continue relying even more heavily on Draisaitl without Connor McDavid.
He has certainly delivered thus far, recording five multi-point performances in eight games without the captain while tallying 15 along the way.
Look for Draisaitl to continue piling up the points against a rebuilding Sharks team that can’t defend a lick.
Oilers vs Sharks same-game parlay (SGP)
Evan Bouchard is a Sharks killer. The star offensive defenseman has recorded at least one point in seven straight against his Pacific Division counterparts, including four multi-point performances.
Another big night should be in the cards for Bouchard this time around. The Sharks continue giving up a ton of production to opposing defensemen, allowing 42 points to the position over the last 13 games. No team has allowed more points per game to blueliners in that span.
Given how frequently Bouchard shares the ice with Draisaitl, he has a great chance of coming along for the ride if Leon has a big night.
Zach Hyman has three shots or more in six of the last eight games and has seen his 5-on-5 shot rate spike greatly with Kasperi Kapanen on his opposite wing, which is expected to be the case tonight. Additionally, the Sharks rank dead last in shot suppression vs. wingers.
